Bats Come Alive As Baseball Sweeps Storm

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EASTLAKE, Ohio – After being limited to seven total runs on Saturday, Ohio Dominican's baseball team broke out the bats on Monday, scoring 36 runs on 34 hits and 20 walks in sweeping Lake Erie by scores of 12-9 and 24-11 in G-MAC play at Classic Park.

The top of the lineup provided most of the thump in the opener, highlighted by a 5-for-5 performance from senior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio), driving in four and scoring four times as well. Senior Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, senior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) scored three times, and freshman Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio) had two hits and drove in two.

Hillard put the Panthers on the board in the first inning, smacking a three-run homer. Lake Erie countered with two runs in the bottom half, but Bland homered and Vorhees hit a two-run single in the second inning to give ODU a 6-2 lead.

The Storm scored twice in the second themselves to make it 6-4 before Kaucher tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to bump the lead to 7-4. Lake Erie again answered in the bottom half, tallying three runs to even the game.

ODU answered right back, though, as Kaucher and Hillard each had RBI singles to put the Panthers back on top 9-7 in the top of the fifth. Lake Erie had an RBI basehit in the bottom half to cut it to 9-8, but Kaucher would clear the bases in the seventh with a double to give ODU a 12-8 lead.

Junior Danny Matic (Highland Heights, Ohio) came out of the bullpen to pick up the win while sophomore Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) notched his fifth save of the year, tossing the final 2.0 innings.

In game two, ODU led 2-0 on Hillard's sac fly and Bland's home run before the Storm scored four times in the third to grab the lead.

However, it was all Panthers from there. ODU put up seven runs in the fourth, highlighted by Hillard's grand slam, to go in front 9-4.

Bland's RBI single in the fifth made it 10-6, and in the sixth inning, freshman Michael Lang (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit a sac fly, freshman Jake Daniel (Troy, Ohio) a two-run double, and freshman Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) an RBI single to put the Panthers in front 14-6. ODU then put the game away in the seventh with Zeller's RBI single and Lang's two-run basehit.

Seven Panthers had at least two hits in the game, led by Hillard's 4-for-5 effort, and Lang drove in six while tallying three hits. Vorhees and senior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) each had two hits and walked three times, while Staab had three hits and stole three bases.

Junior Brennan Hatten (Fairfield, Ohio) came out of the bullpen and tossed 3.0 innings to earn his first career win.

Ohio Dominican stays on the road to take on No. 6 Ashland in a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
