Long and Barber Lead Softball in Sweep of Maryville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MARYVILLE, Missouri – A pair of stellar pitching performances from freshman Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) and junior Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) led Ohio Dominican's softball team to a sweep of Maryville (MO.) (12-7) in a doubleheader Saturday evening with scores of 4-2 and 5-1 Saturday evening in Maryville.

Long threw her second career complete game and earned her first collegiate win giving up just two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Barber also threw a complete game giving up just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.

Sophomore Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) led the Panthers offensively with four hits and two RBI's on the day while fellow classmate Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) had three hits.

After two scoreless innings in game one, ODU's bats came alive scoring three runs in the third. Freshman Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) started the inning with a single up the middle before stealing second and scoring on a Bales single.  Later in the inning, junior Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bales and then Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) scored on a wild pitch the next batter.

Maryville would score a pair in the bottom half of the third to make the score 3-2 before the Panthers got an insurance run in the fourth.

Bales singled to left field that once again scored Smetzer, this time with two outs. Long continued her gem as she only gave up two hits and three baserunners total to complete the win.

Game two once again saw the Panthers jump out to a lead. After a scoreless first inning, ODU took advantage of a Saint error that allowed Barber to score on a Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) grounder. Mix finished game two reaching base all three times at the plate with two hits and two runs scored.

In the circle, Barber did not allow a hit until the fourth inning while allowing just two baserunners through those first four innings.

ODU would tack on a pair in the fifth inning making the score 3-0 as both Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Mix scored on a Smetzer groundout to first.

Maryville would get a run back in the sixth making the score 3-1 before ODU would add two insurance runs in the top half of the seventh.

Mix scored on a wild pitch and Hackerd hit a sacrifice fly that scored Rayburn from third making the score 5-1 before Barber wiped out the side in the bottom half of the seventh to finish.

The Panthers (4-10) continue their spring break trip playing Missouri-St. Louis tomorrow at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. CT.
