Softball Sweeps Alderson Broaddus On the Road

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – Taylor Farmer's (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) two run home run in the top of the sixth gave Ohio Dominican's softball team a lead in game two they would not surrender as they swept Alderson Broaddus in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action with final scores of 5-2 and 5-3 Friday evening.

The Panthers are riding an 11-game win streak and advance to 19-13 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the conference.

Senior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio), who last week was named National Player of the Week, had five hits on the day with two RBI's and was matched by sophomore Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) also had five hits with four RBI's.

With the Panthers trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth in game two, Barber led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout from Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio). Then Farmer came up and hit her fifth home run of the season to give ODU the lead. The Panthers would tack on an insurance run later in the sixth with a single from Bales that brought around Aubrey Rolon (Hilliard, Ohio) putting ODU up 5-3.

ODU jumped on the Battlers in the first inning as Mix singled to right to bring around Bales from second base. AB would grab the led with three runs in the third inning.

In the fifth, the Panthers were able to get a run back as Bales singled to center to bring Rolon around to score.

Junior Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) earned the win on the mound throwing the final five innings while not allowing a hit and tacking on nine strikeouts as she improved to 9-5 on the year.

In game one, freshman Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) earned the win in the circle improving to 8-3 this season as she allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

The Panthers were able to grab a run in the first inning with some two out thunder. Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) doubled to left and came around to score on one of the three extra base hits from Mix in game one.

Long only allowed two hits in the first three innings and the Panthers would strike for three runs, all with two outs, in the fourth inning. Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) doubled to deep center field to bring around Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) and Bales singled to right field to bring arounds Smetzer and Hackerd.

AB would answer with a pair in the bottom half of the fourth before ODU would tack on an insurance run in the seventh as a sacrifice fly from Barber scored Mix from third after her triple. A 1-2-3 seventh inning for Long secured the win for the Panthers on the road.

ODU is back on the diamond tomorrow as they travel to Elkins, West Virginia to take on Davis & Elkins with first pitch of game one coming at 1 p.m.
