Long's No-Hitter Highlights Softball's Sweep of Cedarville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Sydney Long's (Ashland, Ohio) no-hitter in the 6-0 win in game one highlighted Ohio Dominican's softball teams sweep of Cedarville  as they went on to win game two 9-1 in six innings.

Long's no-hitter was the first since Maria Staton on April 1, 2010 which also was against Cedarville.  Long finished the game with two strikeouts and five walks on 120 pitches.

Junior Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) led the Panther offense with four hits on the day with three RBI's and a home run.

The Panthers took advantage of the Yellow Jackets errors scoring five unearned runs in game one.

Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) came around to score on an error in the second inning before Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) was hit by a pitch to score Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) in the third inning making the score 2-0.

ODU broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning as they took advantage of another Jackets error. Slider singled to left scoring Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) to begin the scoring. Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio), the next batter, then hit a three run home run to left field that brought around Slider and Kierah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio).

Long would find herself in some trouble in the fifth as she walked the bases loaded with two out but a grounder to Rayburn got her out of the inning unscathed.

Long would finish the last two innings giving up one walk capped off with two strikeouts to complete her no-hitter.

In game two, Barber also threw a complete game giving up five hits but just one run with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Both Hackerd and Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) were 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Slider was 2-for-3 in game two and matched Bales with two RBI's.

ODU jumped on the Jackets early in the first inning as the first five hitters all reached base and came around to score. Hackerd and Bales both doubled to begin the game and Slider singled through the left side. A double-steal attempt and an errant throw from second base allowed Bales to score before Mix was hit by a pitch. Barber then doubled down the left field line to score Mix and came around to score on Taylor Farmer's (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) third home run of the year.

Barber allowed just two hits through the first three innings before Cedarville scored once in the fourth inning taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch.

ODU would answer in the bottom half of the fourth with three runs of their own. Smetzer led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a double from Hackerd. After a walk to Bales and Hackerd being thrown out at home, Slider would home to left field putting ODU up 8-1 into the fifth. After a pair of scoreless frames from Barber, a Bales double scored Smetzer to end the game in the sixth inning.

ODU (11-13, 2-0) comes right back to the diamond as they host Findlay on Wednesday, March 20 with games starting at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Panther Field.
