Baseball Stifles Dragons In Home, G-MAC Opening Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior right-hander Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio) carried Ohio Dominican's baseball team to a 6-0 win in game one and senior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) drove in six in a 10-4 win in game two as the Panthers swept a Saturday doubleheader from Tiffin.

The contests were ODU's home and G-MAC openers as the Panthers recorded 20 hits on the day to extend their winning streak to three straight.

In the opener, Bault was dominant. After allowing a leadoff single, he set down 19 Dragons in a row. He would allow just two hits over eight innings, fanning 10 without walking a batter. Bault threw 82 of his 107 pitches for strikes.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when ODU broke it open. Freshman Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) doubled into the left field corner and would come in to score on a sac fly by senior Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio).

The Panthers proceeded to load the bases, and with two outs, junior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) hit a two-run single into shallow left-center to make it 3-0. After a Tiffin error allowed another run to score, senior Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) hit a rocket back up the middle to bring home Machuga and make it 5-0.

ODU tacked on its final run in the seventh as sophomore Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) singled, stole second and came in on Machuga's basehit to right-center.

Staab went 3-for-4 to lead the offense while Zeller and Machuga each recorded two hits.

The offense stayed hot early and often in game two as the Panthers quickly jumped to a big lead. Kaucher smoked a two-run double in the first inning, scoring Hillard and freshman Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio), and senior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) followed with a sac fly to put ODU in front 3-0 four batters into the inning.

Tiffin scored twice in the second, but the Panthers had a quick response, loading the bases with one out. Senior Robbie Jobe (Grove City, Ohio) scored on a fielder's choice grounder, and Kaucher launched an opposite-field grand slam to make it an 8-2 game.

In the third, Machuga hit a solo shot to left center to make it a 9-2 game, and Vorhees capped the scoring with an RBI single to left in the sixth.

Kaucher went 3-for-4 with the six RBIs and scored twice. Hillard and Machuga each had two hits, and Vorhees knocked in two while scoring twice.

Senior Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) picked up the win, working 6.0 innings and allowing four runs in improving to 2-2.

Ohio Dominican and Tiffin will close the series with a doubleheader starting at noon tomorrow.
