Baseball Suffers Sweep Against Wayne State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Ohio Dominican's baseball team started GLIAC play with a pair of setbacks to Wayne State, falling by scores of 3-1 and 7-2 on Saturday as the Panthers concluded their Spring Break trip at the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational.

In the opener, ODU (9-6, 0-2 GLIAC) had a chance to tie the game in the seventh as senior Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) was hit by a pitch and freshman Jonathan Conkle (Massillon, Ohio) singled to right to put runners on the corners with nobody out. However, the next three hitters were retired to close out the game.

The Panthers scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth as senior Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio) and junior Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) singled and sophomore Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) had an infield single for an RBI, scoring Evans.

That knotted the game at 1-1, but the Warriors (10-7, 2-0 GLIAC) scored a run with two outs in the fifth, then tacked on another run in the seventh to go in front 3-1.

Sophomore Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio) started and allowed three hits and one run in 3.1 innings for the Panthers.

ODU managed just five hits in the contest.

In game two, Wayne State jumped to a 3-0 lead, but the Panthers answered with a run of their own in the third. Childers drew a walk with two outs and sophomore Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) doubled to right to score him and make it 3-1.

The Warriors scored three times in the fifth, however, and tacked on another run in the eighth to go on top 7-1. ODU scored once more on an RBI grounder by sophomore Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) in the eighth.

ODU left 13 runners on base in the contest as the Panthers finished with eight hits, drew four walks, and also received the benefit of five Wayne State errors.

Kaucher went 2-for-4 in the contest with a walk to lead ODU offensively, while Burson worked 4.1 innings of relief, yielding just two hits and one run. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

ODU will travel to take on Indianapolis in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22.
