Baseball Takes Opener At Northwood, Falls In Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDLAND, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's baseball team pounded out 15 hits in a 13-3 win over Northwood in game one, but the Timberwolves had a bases clearing double to walk off with a 6-5 game two victory Saturday in GLIAC play.

The 13 runs in the opener matched a season high for the Panthers and the 15 hits are the most for ODU since recording 17 on March 19 against Hillsdale.

Sophomore Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) had an RBI single and senior Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) followed with a sacrifice fly that staked the Panthers to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Junior Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio) had an RBI on a bunt single that scored sophomore Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio) in the second, and freshman Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly in the third that put ODU in front 4-1.

Childers' RBI double in the fourth brought home Paterniti again, extending the lead to 5-1. The Panther first baseman then cranked a three-run shot to left as part of a five run sixth inning as ODU took an 11-3 lead cushion, and the Panthers tacked on two more runs in the seventh to account for the final margin.

Childers finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs, Evans also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Paterniti had a pair of hits and a trio of runs scored as well. Senior Colman Fitzgerald (Centerville, Ohio) finished with two hits and drew two walks, and Kaucher and freshman Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two RBIs.

Freshman Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Panthers started strong in the second game, jumping to a 2-0 lead after Horsley's two-run single to right in the first inning.

The score remained that way until the fourth when Northwood answered with two runs, but Fitzgerald scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to put ODU back on top 3-2.

Northwood took advantage of an ODU error in the seventh to level the game at 3-3, but junior Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) came through with a two-out, two-run single in the eighth that gave the Panthers a 5-3 lead.

An error to start the ninth opened up the door for Northwood, though, as the Timberwolves would load the bases with two outs. Richie O'Neil snuck a double just fair inside the right field line to clear the bases and give Northwood a 6-5 win.

ODU finished with six hits in the game. Paterniti, Fitzgerald and Burson each had a hit and reached via a walk for the Panthers.

Freshman Mitchell Bault (Cincinnati, Ohio) started and allowed two earned runs in 6.0 innings.

Ohio Dominican (13-18-1, 1-15 GLIAC) and Northwood (14-15, 4-7 GLIAC) conclude their series with a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.
