NASHVILLE — Ohio Dominican's softball team won its first game of the 2016 season in walk off fashion against Huntington, 2-1, before falling to Truman 9-0 at the Music City Invitational at Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday.
In the win over Huntington, ODU started the contest strong as freshman Kylie Dempsey (Liberty Township, OH) recorded her first hit of the year, a timely single to drive home freshman Maria Simmonds (Columbus, OH) and give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
Freshman pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, OH) recorded her best game of the season, due partly in thanks to strong defensive support behind her. Lamping went a full seven innings, surrendering seven hits and just one run that came in the fourth inning.
With the bases loaded, one out and the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Taylor Kline (Bellville, OH) singled to send senior Montana Fishel (Gahanna, OH) home, earning a dramatic 2-1 victory for the Panthers.
Kline recorded two hits and one RBI. Senior Julia Suyak (Trenton, MI) went 2-for-3 as well to help lead the offense, her third multi-hit game of the year.
Ohio Dominican dropped its second game of the day against Truman, 9-0. The Panthers recorded four hits in the game. Kline recorded one hit and has recorded at least one hit in six of seven games this season.
Truman scored a single run in the third, two in the fourth and three more tallies in the fifth to pull away.
Sophomore Haley Earl (Dyer, IN) went 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs in the circle.
The Panthers face No. 3 Indianapolis Sunday at 2 p.m. CST to finish play at the Music City Invitational.
