Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – After delaying its opening match of the season for one day, the Ohio Dominican men's soccer team started off the 2015 campaign at home on Friday, with a 1-1 draw in double overtime against Urbana.
With the draw, the Panthers (0-0-1) have now run their season opener unbeaten streak to nine consecutive seasons. The Blue Knights (0-0-1) have now tied ODU twice in the past three years to open the season.
The Panthers would find the scoring net first as freshman Ryan Kasprzak (Hilliard, OH) would score his first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute. Kasprzak's shot would come off a pass from junior Andrew Schwall (Gahanna, OH), and was deflected in off a defender's boot.
ODU would nearly add another goal one minute later as a shot from senior Justin Bonchek (Mayfield, OH) would hit the right post. The Panthers would continue to try and build on their momentum as they recorded four of the next five shots.
Urbana would tie the match however, at 1-1 with a goal off an ODU turnover in the 79th minute. The Blue Knights would post three of the final four shots in regulation as the match headed to overtime.
In the overtime sessions each team would threaten to score, but neither the Panthers nor Blue Knights could find the back of the net as the match would end in a 1-1 draw.
The match was physical throughout as there were a total of 32 fouls, and each team would record three yellow cards.
ODU would hold the advantage in shots at 18-14, while outdueling the Blue Knights in shots on goal, 6-3.
The Black and Gold will be back on the pitch for the second game of a back-to-back on Saturday against Ohio Valley. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
