Box Score 2 NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team finished off a commanding four-game GLIAC sweep at Walsh with wins by scores of 1-0 and 15-1 on Sunday.
In the four games, ODU outscored Walsh 34-3 and allowed just two earned runs on 15 hits on the weekend.
Winners of five straight games and nine of their last 10 games, the Panthers improved to 25-16 overall (16-12 GLIAC). ODU also improved to 11-4 on the road and have won six straight away from home.
Freshman Jacob Tisevich (North Canton, Ohio) hit the first pitch in game one out of the park, and that would be all the scoring in the contest.
Seniors Ryan Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) made that stand up. Bidwell allowed one hit in the first inning, and freshman Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) cut him down from left field trying to reach second.
That was the lone hit surrendered in the game by the two seniors, though. The Cavaliers (17-25, 10-18) only had one runner reach third base, which occurred in the fourth inning, and Bidwell got a foul out to first base to end that inning.
Bartolone entered in the seventh and worked a perfect inning to notch his fifth save of the year.
The one hit Bidwell allowed was his fewest in a start in his career, and he struck out three batters in earning his third victory of the spring.
Tisevich's homer was his fourth of the season, with all four coming in the past two weeks.
In game two, ODU scored in each of the first four innings to build a 10-0 lead and take command of the game.
Sponseller hit an RBI double and junior Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) hit an RBI single as the Panthers took a 3-0 lead through two innings, and a two-run single by freshman Justin Childers and Horsley's two-run double helped the Panthers to an 8-0 lead through three.
A sacrifice fly by senior Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) in the fourth inning was compounded by a Cavalier error to give the Panthers a 10-0 cushion.
Senior Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) hit his third home run of the season in the seventh inning, and freshman Eddie Harper (Berea, Ohio) and sophomore Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio) each had RBI basehits in the ninth inning. Junior Austin Greene (Dublin, Ohio) also picked up an RBI in the ninth inning.
Freshman Tyler Magley (Baltimore, Ohio) was the benefactor of the run support, though he pitched well enough to win a much lower-scoring contest. The right-hander's first start in GLIAC play saw him toss seven innings and allow just five hits and one earned run.
It was the longest outing of his season, and he improved to 3-1 while lowering his ERA to 3.00 with the win.
The Panthers pounded out 17 hits, led by a 3-for-4 effort from Horsley. Evans went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, while Sponseller, Schluessler and sophomore Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) each had a pair of hits as well for ODU.
Ohio Dominican takes on Wayne State at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Detroit in a non-conference matchup.
