Box Score 2 TIFFIN, Ohio – Two strong pitching performances lifted Ohio Dominican's baseball team to a GLIAC doubleheader sweep at Tiffin as the Panthers won by scores of 5-3 and 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
In the opener, junior
Ryan Colegate (Centerville, Ohio) tossed 6.2 innings and allowed one earned run before exiting, with senior
Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) tossing 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the victory in relief.
The nightcap saw freshman
Joe Filosa (Fort Wayne, Ind.) throw five innings and limit the Dragons to two runs. Senior
Ryan Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.) then earned the save with two perfect innings of relief.
With the wins, ODU improved to 16-14 (8-10 GLIAC), while the Dragons fell to 13-22 (7-11 GLIAC).
The opener was scoreless until the sixth inning when ODU cracked through with three runs. Freshman Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) walked with one out, then went to third on an error. He would score on a fielder's choice grounder by senior Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio), and consecutive RBI singles by freshmen Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) and Max Banke (Grove City, Ohio) put the Panthers on top 3-0.
Tiffin answered in the bottom half with three runs of its own, though, taking advantage of two ODU errors to tie the game.
Both teams left two runners on board in the seventh, sending it to extra innings, but ODU struck quickly with two runs in the eighth. Banke walked and later scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by freshman Jacob Tisevich (North Canton, Ohio), and an infield single by freshman Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio) brought home sophomore Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) to put ODU on top 5-3.
Tiffin would put two runners on board with one out in the eighth, but Bartolone induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
ODU received two hits apiece from the bottom of its order, as Childers, Banke and Burson each finished with a pair of hits. Tisevich also had two hits, and Sponseller drew three walks in the cleanup spot.
Colegate did not earn a decision, but did toss 6.2 strong innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits. He struck out six without walking a batter and lowered his ERA to 2.05 on the spring.
Bartolone worked his sixth consecutive scoreless relief appearance, allowing just two hits, and improved to 3-0 on the season.
In game two, ODU struck quickly with two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by senior Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio), then scored another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Tisevich.
Tiffin scored two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to draw within 3-2, but junior Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) had a basehit to center field that scored Sponseller to make it 4-2 in the fifth.
After an RBI single by junior Colman Fitzgerald (Centerville, Ohio) scored Burson to make it 5-2 in the sixth, the Dragons put two runners aboard with nobody out in the bottom of the inning. Bidwell entered in relief and got a fielder's choice grounder and a double play grounder to end the threat, then worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the save.
Horsley, Tisevich and senior Kyle Sumisnki (Fraser, Mich.) each had two hits to lead the Panthers in the second game.
Ohio Dominican is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader with Lake Erie, the start of a seven game homestand for the Panthers.
