Offense Puts Up Runs, Baseball Settles For Split At Hillsdale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's baseball team won game one 9-5 but could not complete a GLIAC doubleheader sweep of host Hillsdale, falling 12-8 in the second game on Sunday.

The Panthers and Chargers also split their two games on Saturday. ODU now sits at 14-14 (6-10 GLIAC) while the Chargers moved to 11-23 (6-12 GLIAC).

ODU tallied 26 hits on the day, highlighted by a 6-for-7, five RBI performance in the doubleheader by freshman Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio). Freshman Jacob Tisevich (North Canton, Ohio) had four hits, including his first collegiate home run, and also scored four runs, and senior Ronn Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) also recorded four hits on the afternoon.

The Panthers scored the first eight runs in the opener, highlighted by a five-run third inning. Already leading 1-0, Sponseller's two-run single gave ODU a 3-0 lead, and senior Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) followed with an RBI basehit. Later in the frame, Bidwell had an RBI single to center, and Burson followed with an RBI double down the left field line to cap the scoring and put the Panthers in front 6-0.

Sophomore Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio) scored on a wild pitch and throwing error in the fourth, and senior Kyle Suminski (Fraser, Mich.) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to give the Panthers the 8-0 cushion.

Senior Ryan Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up the victory as he tossed 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He punched out a season-high six batters.

Sponseller and Burson each went 3-for-4 in the game, and Ronn Bidwell finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Evans and Tisevich also had two hits apiece.

ODU kept rolling offensively early in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning. Tisevich led off the game with a home run to left field, Sponseller hit a sacrifice fly, and Schluessler's RBI single to left brought home the third run.

Sponseller and Ronn Bidwell each had RBI singles in the second and third innings as ODU went in front 5-1, and another run-scoring single by Sponseller in the fourth gave the Panthers a 6-2 lead.

Hillsdale, though, countered with five runs in its half of the fourth to go on top 7-6. ODU tied it on Burson's RBI basehit in the fifth, but the Chargers answered with a run of their own in the bottom half, another run in the sixth, and a three-run seventh inning to go in front 12-7.

Tisdale's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning accounted for the Panthers' final tally of the day.

Sponseller went 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI in this contest, Tisevich scored three runs and tripled in addition to his home run, and Ronn Bidwell finished with two hits.

Ohio Dominican is back on the road for a GLIAC doubleheader at Tiffin starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
