Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Three runs in the tenth lifted Ohio Dominican's baseball team to a 9-6 extra inning win over Winona State in the Panthers' final game at the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational.
The Panthers led 6-2 going into the bottom of the seventh before yielding three runs in that frame and another in the eighth to tie the score.
Junior Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) started the tenth with a double to left field, then came in to score on an RBI single by freshman Jacob Tisevich. Later in the inning, junior Colman Fitzgerald (Centerville, Ohio) had an RBI basehit that brought home sophomore Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio), and ODU capped the inning with a two-out RBI single by freshman Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio).
Senior Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) worked around a one-out error in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory, which moved the Panthers to 7-4 on their spring break trip.
The Panthers pounded out a season-best 18 hits in the win. Sponseller paced the way with a 4-for-6 performance at the dish, while Fitzgerald went 3-for-6. Burson, Horsley and freshman Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) each had two hits as well to lead ODU.
Senior Alberto Canales (West Miramar, Florida) did not earn a decision but went 6.1 innings and allowed three runs. He threw a first pitch strike to 21 of 26 batters he faced.
Bartolone went 2.0 innings in relief and punched out three hitters without allowing a hit.
Tisdale had an RBI double in the first inning to draw first blood, and Horsley had a two-run double in the fourth as part of a three-run inning that gave ODU a 4-1 lead.
Childers had a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and freshman Jake Collinsworth (Cincinnati, Ohio) launched his first collegiate home run later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-2 before Winona State rallied late to tie it.
Ohio Dominican opens up its home and GLIAC schedule with a four game series against Grand Valley State, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
