Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team capped a weekend road sweep with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-13) victory at Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon.
Junior Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, MI) and senior Tory Thompson (Quincy, OH) paced the Panthers (9-9, 4-5 GLIAC) with nine kills apiece. Oestriech led the team in hitting percentage at .381, her third consecutive match hitting over .300, and the 11th time this season.
Hitting .316 for the match was freshman Kelly Nadler (Leipsic, OH), as she added eight kills, and fellow freshman Anna Ficker (Cincinnati, OH) led ODU with 15 digs. Senior Kelsey Fortney (Lorain, OH) assisted on a team high 25 points.
The Panthers hit .210 for the match, while holding the Lakers (0-13, 0-9 GLIAC) to just a .054 hitting percentage. ODU held a 43-25 advantage in kills, while also posting six blocks to LSSU's two.
In a tight first set, the Panthers would hold a 13-11 advantage prior to opening up their largest lead of the set at 21-16 with a kill from Thompson. The Lakers would cut the deficit to as little as one, but the ODU would take four of the final five points, securing the opening frame 25-21.
The Black and Gold took an early five point lead in the second set, scoring eight of the opening 11 points, with the run capped by a kill from sophomore Ciara Ralston (Findlay, OH). LSSU rallied to tie the set at 11-11, but the Panthers took the next four points, as they ended the frame on a 14-7 run.
Just as they did in the second set, ODU started the third frame strong, scoring the opening five points capped by another kill from Ralston. The Panthers would then be aided by a 7-2 run to take a 12-5 advantage. ODU led by as many as 13 in the final set, taking the third frame, 25-13.
The Panthers will be back in action next weekend when they compete at the Midwest Regional Crossover in Aurora, Illinois. ODU's first match will take place on Friday, October 16.
