Panthers and Yellow Jackets Battle in Five Sets

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican Panthers (15-4, 7-2 G-MAC) volleyball team took part in a road nail-biter against a G-MAC South opponent, the Cedarville Yellow Jackets (8-8, 6-2 G-MAC) on Friday (Oct. 9) night. 

In a thriller, the Panthers fell in five sets to the Yellow Jackets in the Callan Athletic Center.

  • Set 1: ODU 30-28
    • The set was close early on with two ties (2-2 & 4-4). Cedarville used a 6-0 run to lead 9-4. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Panthers 9-6 to open the largest lead of the set 18-10 as ODU called timeout. The Panthers went on a 12-4 run, tying the set at 22. Cedarvlle has four different set point chances but the Panthers answered every time to tie the set. After a 28-28 tie, kills by Ava Horn and Taylor Thiery ended the set and the Panthers led 1-0. 
  • Set 2: ODU 25-20
    • Cedarville led 4-2 while there were four ties in the first ten points. An attack error gave the Panthers a 6-5 lead – a lead they would not relinquish. Ohio Dominican led by as many as six points in the set, winning 25-20. 
  • Set 3: CU 27-25
    • After trailing early in the set (4-2), Ohio Dominican scored nine of the next 11 points for an 11-6 lead on a block by Evelyn Connor and Logan Rubel. The Panthers led by six points twice (15-9 and 16-10) before the Yellow Jackets went on a run. Cedarville used a 10-3 spurt to regain the lead 20-19. Two kills by Rubel and an ace by Horn allowed ODU to lead 22-20. The Panthers had two opportunities for set point but the Yellow Jackets kept the set alive both times. Cedarville closed the set with three straight points, 27-25. 
  • Set 4: CU 25-23
    • Ohio Dominican scored the first point but Cedarville quickly gained control of the set. The Yellow Jackets led 17-9 for the largest lead of the set. Ohio Dominican closed the lead to 24-23 with a 14-7 run, forcing a timeout by the home team. Cedarville got the final point to force a fifth set. 
  • Set 5: CU 15-10
    • The first ten points were back-and-forth as the momentum swung on both sides. After a 5-5 tie, Cedarville pushed the lead to 10-6 after a Panther timeout. Three straight kills by Rubel got the Panthers within 10-9 but the Yellow Jackets closed the set with a 5-1 run.
