Stanzel Shutouts Nationally Ranked Warriors

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) allowed just five hits over the course of 14 innings in the doubleheader sweep of No. 6 in the nation Wayne State on Sunday afternoon to give the Panthers an overall record of 14-20 and a perfect 9-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. ODU beat the Warriors 3-0 in both games.

Since joining the GLIAC and Division II in 2010, this is the first time the Panthers have swept Wayne State.

In game one, junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) connected with a 2-2 pitch in the bottom of the first to hit a two-out double to left center. Freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) swung on a 1-0 pitch to homer to centerfield, giving ODU a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers scored their third run in the bottom of the fifth when Hinton scored on an infield error.

Stanzel worked her magic, in the sixth and seventh inning, allowing just two hits. For the game, she went the distance for the Panthers, allowing three total hits and no walks.

In game two, Thomas gave ODU an early 1-0 lead after she blasted a two-out homerun to centerfield in the first inning.

In the fifth inning, junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) singled to right on a 2-2 count and junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) placed a bunt perfectly for an infield single. Seeds stole third and scored after junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) hit a bunt single down the first base line. Cribari stole second, which prompted a throw by Wayne State's catcher, allowing Sanner to score and extend ODU's lead 3-0.

Over the next three innings, Stanzel dominated the Warrior lineup, allowing just the two hits. She went the distance once more for the Panthers, picking up her eighth win and striking out three.

Offensively, Hinton paced the Panthers, hitting a combined 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI, a double and homerun. Thomas added two hits, an RBI and a homerun.

Ohio Dominican will host Tiffin in a GLIAC doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 9 starting at 3 p.m.
