Baseball Splits Pair in Tennessee to Start 2014

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE – Ohio Dominican's baseball team rolled to an 11-6 win in its season opener against Union (Tenn.) before falling 8-0 in the nightcap to Trevecca Nazarene Saturday.

In the opener, the Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first four innings. Four straight singles brought home junior Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio), and a sac fly by senior Anthony Raschiila (Girard, Ohio) scored senior Drew Ryan (Newark, Ohio) to give ODU a 2-0 lead in the third.

The Panthers then erupted for four runs in the fourth. Senior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) singled and stole second, then came in on a base hit by senior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio). Schluessler followed with a two-run blast – the first homer of his career – and Raschilla's RBI basehit capped the inning for ODU.

Union answered with four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, though, trimming the Panther lead to 6-4. But the Panthers responded with single tallies in each of the next two frames, with Delgado stealing home in the fifth and Rudolph plating Raschilla on an RBI grounder in the sixth.

ODU kept tacking on runs, scoring twice in the seventh and once more in the eighth to build an 11-4 lead, putting the game away.

ODU pounded out 18 hits, with Raschilla (4-for-5, 3 RBI) and Delgado (4-for-4, 3 R, 3 SB) leading the way. Schluessler and junior KyleTisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) each had three hits and two RBI, while Rudolph knocked in two as well.

Junior Alberto Canales (West Park, Fla.) and worked five innings, allowing four hits and the four unearned runs. He struck out three and walked two in picking up the win. He was followed in relief by junior Austin Monnin (Napoleon, Ohio), who worked a career-best 3.1 innings and allowed two runs.

However, ODU could not gain much traction in the nightcap, committing four errors and finishing with just five hits.

Sophomore Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) had two of ODU's hits, but Austin Bueter (Wauseon, Ohio) was tagged with the loss after allowing six earned runs in 5.2 innings.

The Panthers complete play in Tennessee against Lewis at noon on Sunday.
