COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team will look to rebound from last weekend as they begin the second round of conference play this week.
Weekly Recap
The Panthers lost two, tough road matches over the past weekend, both by a score of 2-1. On Friday the team played now No. 2 Saginaw Valley, and then went to Midland, Michigan to face Northwood on Sunday. Against SVSU, the Panthers scored first as Andrew Schwall (Gahanna, OH) gave the Panthers a late first half lead. The Cardinals scored two goals in a nine minute stretch in the second half to take the victory.
Against Northwood, the Panthers fell behind 2-0 after the first 32 minutes of the match. Then in the 34th minute, senior Jakob Szabo (Worthington, OH) scored the lone goal for the Panthers. ODU played a man down for the last five minutes of the first half and the entire second half after a red card booking.
GLIAC Ranks
As a team the Panthers are ranked second in goals scored with 17. The team also ranks third in shots, 144, and shots per game, 14.4.
Two Panthers rank in the top five of the GLIAC in goals scored. Szabo is third with five goals, while junior Brent Wahle (Pataskala, OH) has added three goals and ranks fifth in the conference. Szabo is also fourth in points with 12, while Wahle ranks fifth with nine.
A couple of Panther sophomores rank tied for second in the conference in assists. Justin Bonchek (Mayfield, OH) and Tanner Ebright (Pickerington, OH) each have three assists on the season.
Findlay (Friday, October 10)
The Black and Gold will now start to face conference foes for a second time this season. The Panthers will travel to Findlay on Friday to take on the Oilers. ODU defeated Findlay the first time this season by a final of 2-1. Both Panther goals came in the first four minutes of the match as sophomores Jacob Atkinson (Hilliard) and Michael Fragoulis (Chios, Greece) scored.
The Oilers come into the week with a 3-7-0 record overall and a 2-5-0 mark in the GLIAC. Findlay has played the top three teams in the conference standings tough at home, going 1-2, while losing by one in both losses.
Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Tiffin (Sunday, October 12)
The Panthers will look for a better result this time around against the Dragons. Tiffin handed ODU its first conference loss of the season a few weeks ago. In the first match, Andre Landell for Tiffin scored two goals. Landell currently leads the nation in both goals, 13, and points, 30.
Tiffin comes into the week ranked 16th nationally with a 7-1-1 record overall. The Dragons also lead the conference standings with a 6-1-0 record.
The match between the Panthers and Dragons will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
