Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican women's soccer team held No. 1 Grand Valley scoreless for 68 minutes, but the Lakers aggressive offense in the second half led them to a 1-0 victory over the Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Panther Field.
With the loss, the Panthers are now 4-2-1 (1-1 GLIAC) while the Lakers improved to 4-0-1 (2-0).
Both teams had legitimate scoring chances in the first half, with the Panthers outshooting the Lakers 5-3. However, things picked up for GVSU in the second half, holding a 6-3 advantage in shots over ODU.
Early in the second half, GVSU's Marti Corby had an opportunity to give the Lakers the 1-0 lead when she tried to score to the right side of the net. However, great defensive work by Panther junior goal keeper Laura Clark (Lapeer, Mich) made a diving stop to keep the game knotted 0-0.
The Lakers Jenny Shaba broke the tie at the 68:56 mark after Katie Bounds found the feet of Shaba in the box who drilled home her second goal of the season.
From there, Grand Valley's defense stepped up the intensity and the Lakers held onto the 1-0 lead.
"I was proud of the effort the team gave today," said head coach Jonathan Meade. "It gave us a good measurement of where we are today. We have a lot of soccer to play yet, and I know we will continue to improve and get better."
Clark faced seven shots on goal, making six saves.
The Panthers return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 27 as ODU welcomes Tiffin to Panther Field for a 6 p.m. match.
