Balanced Effort Leads Baseball By Wayne State, 6-3

Box Score

DETROIT, Mich. – Behind the strength of 13 hits and a solid start from senior Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio), Ohio Dominican's baseball team defeated Wayne State 6-3 on Sunday in the finale  of a three-game weekend series.

With the victory, the Panthers improved to 16-23 (11-13 GLIAC), while the Warriors fell to 27-12 (17-6 GLIAC).

Venditti moved to 5-3 on the spring with his six inning effort on the bump, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out one and walked one, throwing 70 of his 111 pitches for strikes.

ODU scored the game's first run in the second inning when freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio) scored on a wild pitch, and Parcher would score again in the fourth inning after junior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) singled to right to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

A Panther fielding error in the bottom half helped open the door for Wayne State to score two runs and tie it, but ODU responded quickly in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) doubled – one of three on the day for him – to start the inning, then went to third as senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) singled through the right side. Sophomore Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) followed with a third straight hit, singling to right to score Schluessler.

A groundout advanced Rovnak and Tisdale to second and third, and Rovnak would come in on Parcher's RBI groundout. Junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) then capped the three-run inning with a basehit to left to score Tisdale and make it 5-2.

The Panthers would extend their lead to 6-2 in the seventh, as sophomore Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) singled home Parcher from second with two outs.

Wayne State threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but freshman reliever Ryan Colegate (Centerville, Ohio) escaped damage as a lineout to Rovnak at second ended the threat.

The Warriors would score a run in the ninth as the first hitters of the inning reached successfully on an error and two hits, but a strikeout and two groundouts earned Colegate his first save.

Schluessler and Rudolph each had three hits for the Panthers, while Parcher had two hits and scored three runs. Delgado also had a multi-hit game for ODU.

Ohio Dominican heads to Walsh for a GLIAC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
