Baseball Suffers One-Run Defeats at Wayne State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DETROIT, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's baseball team hung with GLIAC frontrunner Wayne State but couldn't crack through with a victory, falling 4-3 and 2-1 on the road Saturday in a conference twinbill.

With the setbacks, the Panthers fell to 15-23 (10-13 GLIAC), while the Warriors improved to 27-11 (17-5).

In the opener, ODU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third, as senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) doubled down the left field line to score sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio), then came in to score on an RBI basehit to center by sophomore Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio).

The Warriors answered with three tallies in the bottom half, though, pounding out four hits to take the lead. Sophomore Daniel Mooney (Wauconda, Ill.) escaped further trouble, though, by striking out the last two hitters with the bases loaded to keep the game at 3-2.

The score remained that way through the seventh when the Panthers came back to tie it. Junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) tripled to center to start the inning, and junior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) followed with a basehit back up the middle to knot the game at three.

However, Wayne State ended it in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run to start the inning.

Mooney struck out eight batters and walked just two while suffering the defeat, throwing six-plus innings. Rudolph had two of ODU's six hits in the game.

Game two was scoreless through the first three frames before ODU cracked through in the fourth. Tisdale started the inning with a double to left-center, went to third on a basehit by junior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio), then came in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio).

The Panthers would load the bases in that inning but could do no more damage, though, and Wayne State would come back with a two-run homer in the fifth to take the 2-1 lead.

ODU managed just one base runner in both the sixth and seventh innings and could not advance either into scoring position.

Tisdale went 2-for-2 and drew a walk as the lone Panther to have a multi-hit performance.

Junior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) took the loss despite allowing just four hits. He struck out three in 5.1 innings pitched.

Ohio Dominican and Wayne State conclude their three-game series at noon on Sunday.
