Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Ohio Dominican softball team dropped a pair of games to Armstrong (Ga.) on Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 12-7 and 2-0. The Panthers now stand at 2-13 on the season while Armstrong moves to 15-2.
In game one against the Pirates, the Panthers opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning, plating five runs. Sophomore Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) singled to left field. Freshman Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) followed with an infield single and ODU had runners on first and second with freshman Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) at the plate. Fishel delivered, singling through the left side, scoring Sanner. Senior Brooke McCartney (Salem, Ohio) reached base on a fielder's choice that allowed Cribari to score. McCartney stole second which allowed Fishel to score on a throwing error. Junior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) kept the momentum going, doubling to center field putting ODU runners at second and third. Freshman Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) followed suit, singling to center field and advanced to second on an error, which allowed Jividen and McCartney to score.
In the bottom of the third, the Pirates tacked on two runs to cut the deficit to three after Ashley Schwab started the inning with an infield single. Kacie Patterson singled to left field and the Pirates had runners on first and third. Peyton Roth loaded the bases after an infield single and Alexis Mercer was awarded first after being walked. Hannah Reppert knocked in Armstrong's second run of the inning after hitting into a fielder's choice, scoring Patterson. Sophomore Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) retired the next batter to get out of the jam and inning.
The Panthers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend their leads to 7-2. Sanner doubled down the left field line, Cribari hit an RBI double to right center, allowing Sanner to score. Cribari advanced to third on a wild pitch and McCartney knocked her in for the second run of the inning.
The Pirates added four more runs in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to give Armstrong the 10-7 lead, and extended it to 12-7 after adding two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Rachel Reynolds retired the side in the seventh and sealed the victory for the Pirates.
Armstrong kept its momentum going in the second game, scoring runs in the bottom of the first and third innings respectively.
The Panthers had the chance for a comeback in the top of the sixth inning after Cribari leadoff with a double to right field. Freshman Elisabeth Weber (Canton, Ohio) singled and stole second to put runners in scoring position for ODU. Jividen drew a walk to load the bases with one out. However, Armstrong's Megan Barnwell and the Pirate defense turned a double play to get out of the inning with their lead still intact.
In the top of the seventh, the Panthers had runners on first and second after sophomore Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) singled to right center and sophomore Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) was hit by a pitch. Once again though, the Pirates defense and pitcher Barnwell got out of the inning and held onto the 2-0 win.
Ohio Dominican travels to Columbus, Ga. to battle the Cougars of Columbus State in a nonconference double-header Thursday, March 7. The first game is slated for 2 p.m.
