Panthers Salvage Split in Conference Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a chilly Friday afternoon, the Panthers came from behind to defeat visiting Northwood 3-2 in the first game. The Timberwolves got the better of the Panthers in game two, defeating ODU 7-1.

The Panthers now sit at 5-18-1 (1-1 GLIAC) while the Timberwolves move to 10-9 (1-1).

It took eight innings, but the Panthers managed to come out on top, defeating the Timberwolves 3-2 in game one.

Northwood struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning after Paige Shields doubled to right field. Stacey Klonowski followed with a single through the right side for the 1-0 lead.

ODU knotted the score in the bottom of the second when sophomore Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) led off the inning with a single through the right side. Senior Brooke McCartney (Salem, Ohio) doubled to left center, advancing Thomas to third. With runners on second and third, sophomore Devan Audette (Bronson, Mich.) hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Thomas for the tie.

In the top of the sixth, Klonowski hit the go-ahead run after blasting her second homerun of the year to left center.

Not to be deterred, the Panther bats came alive in the bottom the seventh with sophomore Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) singling to left field. Freshman Elisabeth Weber (Canton, Ohio) sacrificed her, by bunting freshman Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio), who pinch ran for Sanner, over to second. Sophomore Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) connected with the 2-2 pitch, doubling down the left field line to score Fishel for the 2-2 tie.

In their second extra inning game of the year, the Panthers kept their momentum when junior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) singled through the left side. With one out and Jividen on third, Audette came through on the 1-2 pitch with the game-winning run on a single up the middle.

Sophomore Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) picked up the win in the circle, going eight innings while allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Northwood silenced the Panther bats in game two, allowing just one run in the top of the second inning after Audette singled down the left field line to score Jividen.

The Timberwolves took the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on two hits, including a homerun by Rachel Hammer.

Northwood tacked on another run after Hammer hit her second homerun of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 4-1 lead.

The Timberwolves were not down, scoring a run in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth for the final 7-1 victory.

The Panthers continue conference play tomorrow, March 23 as they welcome Lake Superior for a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
