Box Score 2 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On the second day of the University of Southern Indiana Spring Tournament, the Ohio Dominican softball team bounced back from a loss on Saturday with a 4-1 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. In the second game, the Panthers squared off against host Southern Indiana once more, and fell to the Eagles 1-0.
The Panthers now stand at 2-7 on the season while KWU moves to 2-7 and the Eagles go to 6-3.
In the opener, junior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) got the bats going in the first inning, reaching first on a dropped fly ball to the outfield, which in return, allowed her to advance to third. Freshman Elisabeth Weber (Canton, Ohio) hit Jividen in on a two-out RBI single up the middle.
However, in the top of the fifth inning, KWU tied the score after a leadoff triple by Kyli Smithson that was followed by a bunt from Alex Baumgrat, scoring Smithson.
Kentucky Wesleyan had the go-ahead runner on third, but sophomore Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) got of the jam, as Meagan Sallee hit into a double play.
In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) blasted a three-run homer. Things got started when sophomore Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) led the inning off with a single to the left side followed by a single from Fishel. Freshman Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) replaced Thomas on the base paths and the Panthers had runners on first and second. The Fishel sisters swiped second and third respectively, which put them into scoring position for Cribari's home run.
Brandis Fishel retired the side in the top of the seventh, sealing the 4-1 victory for ODU.
In the nightcap, it was a pitcher's dual as the game remained scoreless through five and a half innings until MacKenzi Dorsam blasted a homerun for an Eagles' 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Panthers tried to overcome the one run deficit, but USI's pitching was too much and the side was retired in order to preserve the 1-0 victory.
For the day, Cribari went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Weber went 2-for-3 with an RBI on the day.
The Panthers will start their annual spring break trip next weekend as they travel to Spantanburg, S.C. for a two-day four game series. ODU will square off against Anderson (S.C) on Friday, Mar. 1 at 6 p.m. and Columbus State (GA) at 8 p.m.
