About the Panthers:
In the season opener of the 2012 season, the Panthers showed a strong outing as they prevailed over Bellarmine by the score of 2-1 in its first game of the 2012 season Sunday afternoon at Panther Field.
Senior Casey Weddle (Cincinnati, Ohio) started the Panthers' season in the right direction as he scored the first goal of the game and season at the end of the first half on a penalty kick to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the 42:55 mark.
Following in Weddle's footsteps was sophomore Frazer Fernandes (Gahanna, Ohio), who scored ODU's second goal of the game when he connected on a pass from senior Tyler Huerkamp (Loveland, Ohio) to put the Panthers up 2-0 13:24 into in the second period.
The Knights scored their lone goal on a penalty kick from Cole Page to put them within one at the 76:32 mark of the second period, but ODU was able to hold off several late charges by Bellarmine to secure the victory.
About the Greyhounds:
The UIndy men's soccer team opened the 2012 regular season slate with a 2-1 loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) at Key Stadium.
Coming into the Thursday evening match, the Falcons had lost just one contest in the past two seasons, falling in the 2010 NAIA championship match.
The visiting Falcons got on the board early, scoring just after the 12-minute mark on a free kick from about 30 yards off the foot of Tom Owens. The Greyhounds were able to get the goal back just after the 42nd minute, with Brett Greubel finishing a rebound on a scramble in the box. Roger Lee earned the assist on the score, UIndy's first of the year.
The Greyhounds took a 4-1 loss at Cedarville Saturday evening in Ohio. The host Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead over the Greyhounds (0-2) at the 32:32 mark, with Christian Alexander tracking a long ball and finishing it in the box. Cedarville would take that 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Freshman Reid Strain tallied the equalizer just before the 52-minute mark, on a header off of a cross from Brett Greubel. The goal was the first of the year and of his collegiate career for Strain.
The Series:
These two teams first met in the fall of 2009. Since then, the Panthers have gone 2-1 with a two game win streak. In their meeting last year, ODU defeated the Greyhounds 3-1 at Panther Field.
Weddle opened the scoring for the Panthers as he collected a loose ball in front of the net after the goalkeeper was unable to corral it off a header, and put it in with just over 38 minutes remaining.
ODU continued to force the tempo and less than three minutes later went up 2-0 as Weddle, with a pass ahead, found a streaking Justin Wheeler (Gahanna, OH), who nailed the shot from the close right wing from about 12 yards out.
The Panthers were not finished however, as Fernandes added an insurance goal in the 79th minute, ripping a perfectly place strike eight yards away from the left wing to the far lower-90 for his first collegiate score.
