ODU's Men's Soccer Takes to the Road on Four Game Trek

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio Dominican men's soccer starts their four road game trek this weekend, starting with Malone (0-4; 0-3 GLIAC) tonight, Sep. 21 and then neighboring Walsh (2-4; 2-2 GLIAC) on Sunday, Sep. 23.

About the Panthers:

In the past five days, the Panthers have played in five games, recording a 2-0-1 record. Most recently, ODU drew a 0-0 double overtime tie against Cedarville on Panther Field.

Following the scoreless opening half, the Panthers had a chance to seal the win after senior Colby Catlett's (Hilliard, Ohio) header of senior Justin Wheeler's (Gahanna, Ohio) corner kick was saved by the Yellow Jackets goalie Ethan Dewhurst at the 94:05 mark.

The Yellow Jackets would threaten when Jeremy Hope's shot was stopped by a leaping junior goalie Dean Dziewit (Waterford, Mich.).

Cedarville finished with a decisive 19-11 advantage shots, including 9-2 in the first half, but tied on shots on target 5-5.

Dziewit notched five saves in goal.

About the Pioneers:

The Malone University men's soccer team is still searching for its first win on the season after dropping a wild match, which saw the head official award three penalty kicks, at Notre Dame College 5-2 on Sunday. The Pioneers got off to a dream start after junior Kelvin Aquino found the net with a shot from the top of the box just two minutes into the game. Freshman Sam Tonelli picked up his first career assist on the play. Notre Dame would equalize when it was awarded a penalty kick for a handball that occurred inside the box. Tom Owens slotted home the attempt, tying the game at 1-1. Christian Earnest and Renan Trocolli would add first half goals to send the Falcons into intermission with a 3-1 lead.

Notre Dame increased the margin to three a minute into the second half when the Falcons were given another penalty kick. Once again Owens buried the opportunity.

The center referee returned the favor to Malone in the 53rd minute, awarding his third penalty kick of the game. Junior Rubem Miranda converted the kick, pulling Malone to within two. However, Notre Dame's Connor McFall ended all doubt about the outcome in the 72nd minute, scoring from 20 yards out to put the Falcons up 5-2, which is how the game would finish.

About the Cavaliers:

After a heartbreaking defeat in overtime on Friday, Walsh came from behind to win a thrilling 2-1 decision in double overtime over hosting Tiffin on Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC.

Matt Bly provided the game-winning goal in dramatic fashion as he scored on an assist from Juan Amaya with less than two minutes separating the teams from a 1-1 draw. It was his first goal of the season.

Tiffin scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute and took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Kain Melville was able to score the equalizer unassisted in the 54th minute.

Frank Sanabria received the start in goal and recorded four saves on the day.

About the Series:

The Pioneers and the Panthers last met in 2008 while both were members of the American Mideast Conference. The Panthers won 4-0 at Panther Field. ODU is 4-2 since 2001 versus Malone including three straight shutouts.

In the last seven meetings between the Panthers and Cavaliers, ODU has a 4-3 edge on the series. The last meeting between the two teams resulted in a 3-2 Panther win at Panther field with three goals in a 10 minute stretch. The win last year broke the 3-3 tie the team compiled in 2004-2009.
