COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, Ohio) helped the Panthers to a 3-1 win over visiting Ashland last night by scoring two goals. Catlett and company welcome Walsh to Panther Field tomorrow, Oct. 14 for a 4:00 pm conference matchup.
About the Panthers:
Senior Drew Edler (Hilliard, Ohio) knocked in his first goal of the season and game after sophomore Frazer Fernandes (Gahanna, Ohio) kicked the ball to the five yard line.
Catlett added another goal at the 26:38 mark to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead before the half when he connected from senior Justin Wheeler (Gahanna, Ohio) to the left side of the goal.
At the 35:47 mark, the Eagles Eric Ashley cut the lead to one after he had an open shot on goal.
Following the break, Catlett added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when he hooked up with sophomore Jakob Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) for his second goal of the game.
The Panthers offense paced the game, outshooting the Eagles 21-10 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman goalie Macklin Robinson (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up his third win this year and recorded two saves.
About the Cavaliers:
No. 21 Saginaw Valley State University used two first half goals en route to a 3-0 defeat of Walsh at Milazzo Field.
Saginaw Valley took the lead after its offense attacked with a few shots in the 15thminute. One of the shots bounced off a Walsh defender as the ball found its onto the right side of the box where Zach Walega was able to put it in the net. Zach Myers added two more goals in the 28thand the 87thminutes to set up the final score.
Mike Kelley made seven saves in goal on 21 shots faced. Jordan Semple had four shots for the Cavs' offense.
On Sunday afternoon, Walsh, defeated Ashland 5-3.
The Cavs offense got on the board early and scored often with four goals in the opening half. Chad Dickerhoof provided the first goal after a pass from Darby found him near the end line. Dickerhoof was able to put the hard-angle shot past the goalie for the early lead at 8:14.
Broc Sutek made it 2-0 after he headed in a midfield pass from Adam Greenwood 12 minutes later. Chris Lynch scored the first of two goals on the day following an assist from Dickerhoof on a free kick in the 31stminute.
Ashland eventually got on the board in the 34thminute after Keiichi Nguyen scored from inside the 8-yard box at 34:58. Walsh was able to answer as Jordan Semple took a pass from Sutek on the right side of the box, caught the goalie out from the net and was able to lob it over his head for a 4-1 lead just under four minutes before the half.
In the second half, Lynch added his second goal of the game on a double-assist from Kain Melville and Josh Habeck at 62:43 to make it 5-1. Ashland didn't go away despite the deficit and added two goals in the final 10 minutes to set up the 5-3 final.
About the Series:
In the fall of 1992 is when these first two teams met. The Cavaliers walked away with a 2-1 victory. Since then, the Panthers have held a 9-6 advantage in the series.
