Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team was limited to just six hits on the afternoon as Ashland swept a GLIAC doubleheader from the Panthers by counts of 3-0 and 8-0 Saturday at Frank Damian Field.
With the setbacks, ODU drops to 9-14 (6-6 GLIAC), while the Eagles improved to 15-10 (6-6 GLIAC).
The first game, which wrapped up in a tidy one hour and 21 minutes, featured a fine duel between the aces of both staffs in Ashland's Ajay Meyer and sophomore Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio). Borgan (2-3) settled down after allowing three runs in the second, yielding just one hit after the third inning and setting down the final 12 hitters he faced. He finished with five strikeouts and allowed seven hits in his fourth complete game effort of the year.
Unfortunately, Meyer – the 2009 GLIAC Pitcher of the Year – was sharper throughout the contest, holding the Panthers to just three hits while fanning three without issuing a walk. He retired the first seven hitters he faced and did not allow a runner to reach scoring position as he improved to 6-1 on the year.
In the second contest, Ashland again jumped to a 3-0 lead, scoring a trio of runs in the opening stanza. The Panthers would put runners on second and third after an error and a walk in the second but could not push across a run, and ODU also couldn't capitalize after putting runners on first and second in the third inning as a double play ended the inning.
Ashland would tack on a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and the Panthers, who managed just two additional baserunners over the final four frames, could not respond.
Senior Zane Miller (London, Ohio) started and suffered the loss, pitching 5.1 innings to fall to 1-3 this year.
The Panthers and Eagles conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Frank Damian Field. The games will be broadcast online at www.pressboxproductions.net.
