Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Dominican's softball team ran into a strong effort in the circle by the Wayne State (Mich.) pitching staff Sunday afternoon at Panther Field as the Warriors swept the second doubleheader between the teams in as many days by the finals of 8-4 and 6-0.
After falling in game one of the four-game series, WSU has knocked off ODU in three straight to improve to 17-13 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC, while the Panthers drop to 7-21 and 2-8 in the conference.
Sam Cain and Lauren McLaughlin combined to allow just four ODU runs on 11 hits as both went the distance in the circle for the Warriors.
Wayne St. took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one on an RBI single up the middle, but ODU scored two runs in the second and one in the third to move ahead, 3-1. Caitlin Chaney (Jr./Newark, OH) led off the bottom of the second with a single, one of her game-high three hits, and following an intentional walk to Caitlin Jividen (Fr./Wheeling, WV), Rebekha Lucas (Fr./Laurelville, OH) drilled a two-RBI double to left center her first collegiate extra-base hit.
The Warriors reclaimed the lead at 4-3, plating a run in the top of the fourth on a double to left and two in the fifth on shot up the middle. ODU tied it up in the home-half of the fifth as Jennifer Baker (Sr./Cortland, OH) delivered an RBI-double down the left field line to score Brittany Seavey (Fr./Flint, MI) after Seavey and Erin Sutter (Jr./Mansfield, OH) opened the at-bat with consecutive bunt singles.
A four-run, five-hit sixth inning by WSU proved too much to overcome for the Panthers as the Warriors held ODU to one base hit over the final two innings to take the 8-4 decision.
It was all Wayne State in game two as McLaughlin kept the Panthers hitters off-balance allowing just three hits, while striking out four in the complete game shutout. She had a perfect game through four innings until a fielding error and Brooke McCartney (So./Salem, OH) single in the top of the fifth.
Maria Staton (Sr./New Bremen, OH) pitched well in relief for the second straight day, allowing just two hits in 3.1 innings of work, while fanning two, but the damage was done as the Warriors sent a pair of runs across in the first and four in the second to earn the 6-0 decision.
After a stretch of six home doubleheaders, ODU hits the road on Wednesday, April 6 for a 3:30 p.m. twin bill against GLIAC foe Tiffin.
