Box Score 2 FINDLAY, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team couldn't snap out of its slump as it dropped both ends of a GLIAC doubleheader Wednesday at Findlay, falling 5-4 and 12-0 at Fifth Third Field.
The Panthers have now dropped six straight and are 12-21 overall (9-13 GLIAC). Findlay improved to 11-21-1 (8-13 GLIAC).
In the opener, ODU rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score three times in the third to gain its first lead. Junior Evan Shaw (Delaware, Ohio) was hit by a pitch and stole second, went to third on a single to left by senior Germaine McAlpine (Canton, Ohio), and scored ODU's first run on a failed pickoff attempt. The throwing error sent McAlpine all the way to third, though after a pair of walks to senior Felix Brown (Philipsburg, St. Maarten) and junior Austin Grate (Fort Wayne, Ind.), McAlpine would be cut down at the plate on a grounder to third. Brown, though, would come in to score on a passed ball, and Grate scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
The Oilers tallied a run in their half of the third to tie and regained the lead with another single tally in the bottom of the fifth. ODU, though, tied the score at four in the sixth as the Oilers could not complete a double play, with an errant throw from second base scoring Rudolph, who had singled with one out.
But the Panthers allowed an unearned run of their own in the sixth as an error on a potential double play grounder resulted in an Oiler run, and ODU went down in order in the top of the seventh to allow Findlay to take the win.
Sophomore Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) went the distance for the Panthers and allowed six hits and four earned runs while falling to
In the second game, Ohio Dominican was out-hit 14-3 by the host Oilers, as Findlay jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first and proceeded to score in five of the six innings en route to the win and a split in four-game season series. The Panthers had defeated Findlay twice on March 31 by scores of 3-1 and 9-8.
Rudolph had three of ODU's 10 hits on the afternoon, while Brown had a pair of hits and walked twice.
The Panthers return home to host Saginaw Valley State for a four-game GLIAC series, starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Thursday and two more games on Saturday.
