Errors Prove Costly as Northwood Takes Two from Panthers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDLAND, Michigan – Ohio Dominican's softball team mounted a pair of spirited rallies in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Northwood (Mich.), but 10 errors on the day, including seven in the night cap allowed the Timberwolves to complete the sweep, 14-11, after the taking the first game 8-0 in five innings.

As the visiting team in game two per conference rules, Northwood (17-14-1, 11-8-1 GLIAC) jumped out to a quick 8-0 advantage thanks to several ODU fielding miscues that resulted in four unearned runs. The Timberwolves sent one run across in the first on a solo homerun to left, two runs in the second and five in the third behind back-to-back long balls.

ODU (7-31, 2-18 GLIAC) closed to within 8-6 after the fourth inning as Kylee Crislip (Jr./Louisville, OH) belted her second three-run homer in as many days to right center in the bottom of the third and Jennifer Baker (Sr./Cortland, OH) and Brooke McCartney (So./Salem, OH) each collected a pair of RBI in the fourth to go along with a run scored by Shana Etter (Sr./Tuslaw, OH) on a wild pitch.

Northwood once again took advantage of more Panther errors with four runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh to build the lead to 14-6. Led by its freshmen, ODU rallied once again, plating five runs on five hits in the seventh, including an RBI double to left by Rebekha Lucas (Fr./Laurelville, OH) and a pair of RBI singles from Caitlin Jividen (Fr./Wheeling, WV) and Brittany Seavey (Fr./Flint, MI), but eight unearned runs proved too much to overcome as the Timberwolves completed the sweep, 14-11.

Baker and Etter both finished with three hits apiece to lead six Panthers with multi-hit efforts.

It was all Northwood in game one as starting pitcher Megan Eddy pitched a five-inning shutout, surrendering just two hits and one walk, while fanning four. The Timberwolves collected eight runs on seven hits in the game, including a two-run homer down the left field line in a three-run first inning and a three-run dinger to left center in the second. A two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth sealed the 8-0 win.

The Panthers complete their Michigan road trip tomorrow at 12 p.m. as they head to University Center to take North Division No. 2 Saginaw Valley State in a conference twinbill.
