COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Dominican's football team will make its second-straight trip to Michigan this week, though the ride will be a bit longer as the Panthers travel to the Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Panthers (0-3, 0-3 GLIAC) dropped their third-straight game this season after suffering a 17-7 setback at Wayne State last Saturday. The Warriors scored on the first possession of the second half to open up a 17-0 lead, but Ohio Dominican's offense answered. Mark Nichols' 36 yard run, sprung by a block from quarterback Billy Griffin, set up Griffin's one-yard TD run two plays later to cap off an eight-play, 75-yard drive.
That would be the lone scoring drive for ODU, however. The Panthers missed a 54-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and an interception sealed the game on their last possession with under four minutes remaining in the ballgame.
Nichols led the ODU offense with 90 rushing yards, while Tyler Purcell had three catches for 39 yards. The defense was paced by safety Eisen Hardy (pictured), who had an interception and made 14 tackles, while safety Jeff White made 11 tackles and linebacker Vincent Vasquez, in his first career start, finished with 13 stops.
The Panthers were outgained 448-244, and Wayne State had a decided edge in time of possession (36:59-23:01). Still, ODU's defense came up with several big plays and limited the Warriors to two touchdowns in seven trips inside the red zone.
