COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Malone University on Wednesday evening at Thurman Munson Stadium. The Panthers offense stalled in game one as they fell 2-1, but bounced back in the nightcap as they piled up 17 hits en route to a 10-4 victory.
ODU's offense was silenced through five innings in the opener as Malone starter, Justin Szydlowski, held the Panthers attack to just five hits in the game. The Pioneer took an early lead in game one as they plated a run in the bottom of the third.
The home team carried that lead into the sixth inning where ODU got a leadoff single from Germaine McAlpine (Jr./Canton, OH). McAlpine would eventually score on a wild pitch to knot the game at one. It wouldn't be enough as the Pioneers answered in their half of the inning to regain the lead and hold on for the victory.
ODU was led by Felix Brown (Jr./ Philipsburg, St. Maarten; pictured) who recorded two hits and McAlpine who scored the only run. Starting pitcher Andy Onak (Sr./Ormond Park, IL) suffered the loss as he went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
The Ohio Dominican bats came alive in the nightcap as the Panthers struck early and often, taking control with seven runs in the first three innings. The Panthers went on to tie a season high with 17 hits in the game and rolled to a 10-4 decision.
Freshman righthander Alex Borgan (Pickerington, OH) started on the mound and picked up his third win of the season with a complete game performance. Borgan held the Pioneers to four runs, none of which were earned, on eight hits.
Leading the way at the plate was Evan Shaw (So./Delaware, OH) who went a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. JT Feldkamp (Jr./Lorian, OH) added three hits and collected three RBI in the win.
With the win ODU moves their record to 14-23 on the year. The Panthers will return to action on Sunday, April 18th as they return to Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh University. Game time for the Panthers and Cavaliers doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
