COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team dropped a pair of games on Wednesday afternoon in their home opener to former American Mideast rival Malone University. The Panther bats were silenced in front of their home fans as they dropped the twin bill by the scores of 13-3 and 11-2.
Ohio Dominican got off to a good start in the opener as they scored in the second inning and starting pitcher Alex Borgan (Fr./Pickerington, OH) held the Pioneer scoreless through three innings. The Panthers first run came in the second inning when catcher J.T. Feldcamp drew a two out walk bringing up Felix Brown (Jr./ Philipsburg, St. Maarten). Brown came up big with a RBI triple to center field that easily scored courtesy runner Germaine McAlpine (Jr./Canton, OH) giving ODU their only lead of the day.
Malone finally got to Borgan in the fourth inning as they rallied for seven runs to take the lead and never looked back. ODU looked to the bullpen, but it was more of the same as the ODU relievers allowed six more runs to drop the run shortened game.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers offense didn't let up as they scored in each of the first four innings. Malone took the early lead as they led off the game with a double by Justin Shiflett, who eventually scored on a single. The Pioneers tacked on two runs in each of the next three innings to take a 7-2 lead. ODU's only runs of the game came in the second inning thanks to a solo shot by Caleb Wilburn (Fr./Delaware, OH; pictured) and back-to-back singles by McAlpine and Brown.
Zane Miller (Jr./London, OH) suffered the loss on the mound for Ohio Dominican as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits in the lopsided victory.
Ohio Dominican will return to action this weekend as they travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on Trevecca Nazarene University in a four game series. Friday's opener is set for 12 p.m.
