Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Ohio Dominican's football team saw its inaugural season in NCAA Division II and the GLIAC come to a close with a 31-17 setback Saturday at Indianapolis' Key Stadium.
The Panthers finished with a 2-8 record, with all 10 contests coming against conference foes. Indy closed its season with a 6-5 mark overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC.
Junior Mike Noffsinger (pictured) ran for 82 yards and finished with 794 yards on the season, extending his school single-season record. Jeremy Fudge ran for a game-high 98 yards and threw for 130 yards, and Brandon Robinson had 73 receiving yards on 10 catches.
Ohio Dominican rushed for 224 yards and had 354 yards of total offense, outgaining Indy by three yards. It was the second-most rushing yards in a game this season and also just the second time this season ODU outgained an opponent.
Jason McCurdy finished his career with 13 tackles and Dominic Clegg had a career-high 10 stops. Vincent Vasquez made nine tackles to set the school single-season record with 103 tackles.
Trailing 24-0 at half, the Panthers controlled the third quarter and cut into the deficit. On their opening drive, Fudge hooked up with Robinson on a 20-yard gain rolling to his right, and connected with Purcell on a hook route on fourth and four to get to the Indy 17. The junior quarterback then called his own number for a nine-yard gain, and Nate Weeks plunged ahead for a one-yard score to make it 24-7 with 8:54 to play in the third.
After a missed field goal by the Greyhounds, the Panthers faced third and one on their own 32. Fudge faked a handoff to Noffsinger and kept it himself up the middle, racing untouched for 54 yards before being brought down at the Indy 14. Chris Vortkamp booted a 22-yard field goal to bring the Panthers to within 24-10 with 19 seconds left in the third.
The Panthers defense forced a punt, and the offense picked up a pair of first downs on a 15 yard run by Tyler Purcell and an 11-yard catch by Robinson. A penalty stalled the drive, though, and the Panthers failed to convert a fourth and six at midfield to turn the ball over on downs to Indy. The Greyhounds scored six plays later to make it 31-10 with 6:45 left in the game.
ODU answered with a touchdown, though, marching 66 yards in 12 plays and scoring on a four yard score from Fudge to Robinson with 2:07 to play. The Panthers could not recover the onside kick, though, and the Greyhounds ran out the rest of the clock.
The Greyhounds scored a touchdown on their second drive of the game, moving 11 plays in 60 yards, capped off by Paul Corsaro's four-yard TD run at the 4:27 mark of the first quarter. Indy converted a fourth-and-16 from the Panther 27 to help set up the score.
Ohio Dominican converted a fourth down of its own near midfield on its next possession, but the Panthers fumbled on the ensuing play to give Indy control of the ball on their own 47. The Hounds reached the Panther nine, but a holding penalty bumped them back and Indy settled for a 36-yard field goal at the 12:05 mark in the second quarter to make it 10-0.
ODU went three and out, and the ensuing punt hit the back of one of the linemen, giving the Greyhounds the football on the Panther 25. Three plays later, Chris Mills found Klay Fletcher for a 22 yard TD to make it 17-0, and after an ODU interception, the Greyhounds tacked on another TD to make it 24-0 at the break.
The Panthers were outgained 202-106 in the first half and had just 15 yards passing in the half.
