COLUMBUS, Ohio - After finding themselves in an early hole, the Ohio Dominican women's soccer team made sure the seniors would get the proper send-off in the final game of the careers, rallying late with two scores for a 2-1 come-from-behind OT victory against Northwood (Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.
The GLIAC's leading goal-scorer Amanda Watson got the Timberwolves on the board just under 11 minutes into the game with a header straight on from nine yards off a pass from Heather Rhodes.
NU took the 1-0 lead into the break, despite being outshot 7-3 by the Panthers.
The score would remain until the 76th minute when ODU finally broke through as Jennifer Holton (So./Johnstown, OH) lofted a cross to Sierra Patterson (Jr./Brecksville, OH) who headed in the score on the far post from three yards away. The Panthers would manage just one more shot in regulation as the game headed to overtime.
With just over four minutes remaining in the first OT, Holton found Patterson again who blasted the game-winner from 14 yards out into the upper left ninety of the goal. With her fourth and fifth scores of the season, Patterson is the third Panther to record a multi-goal game this season. She finishes second on the team with 16 points.
Holton ends the year tied for second on the team with three assists, while leading the squad with 17 points.
Goalkeeper Aimee Simonet (Sr./New Albany, OH) finishes her last season in the Black-and-Gold with a record of 9-4-3. Her eight shutouts this season ties the all-time season mark by a Panther goalie.
The other seniors playing in their final game for ODU were Anna Cameron (Calgary, AB), Meghan Graessle (Galloway, OH), Lauren Fruhwirth (Beavercreek, OH) and Tiffany Schneid (Columbus, OH). Schneid unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury and was unable to play in today's match.
The Panthers conclude the 2010 season one point behind second in the GLIAC South Division with a record of 11-4-3, their fourth straight season of at least 10 wins or more. Per NCAA rules, since ODU is still in the final year of transitioning to NCAA, the women cannot compete in the GLIAC Tournament because of the automatic bid to the national tournament the winner receives.
