Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite playing on a hot Sunday afternoon, the Ohio Dominican men's soccer team carried over the momentum from Friday night's thrilling 2-1 OT road upset of No. 4 University of Charleston to defeat GLIAC foe, Saginaw Valley, 2-0, at Panther Field.
After scoring their first goal with just 24 seconds remaining in regulation of Friday's game, the Panthers got the scoring going early against the Cardinals. Just under 12 minutes into the game, Tyler Huerkamp (So./Loveland, OH) scored his second goal of the season off a blocked shot by Andrew Edler (So./Hilliard, OH).
ODU was able to take the 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to the hustle of AJ Mueller (Sr./Dublin, OH). With just the keeper to beat, Cardinal Zach Walega flipped the ball over a diving Tyler Gleason (Sr./Grove City, OH) from about 10 yards out, but Mueller raced back and managed to clear the ball just before it crossed the goal line.
Edler provided the Panthers an insurance goal at the 54:00 mark of the second half as he received a Felix Darko (Jr./Reynoldburg, OH) pass, took a dribble to the right and nailed it from eight yards out for his third score of the year.
The 2-0 score would hold up as ODU outshot SVSU 10-1 in the second, and 16-5 for the match. Despite not recording a save, Gleason posted his GLIAC leading fourth shutout of the season in goal.
The Panthers (9-3-0, 6-1-0 GLIAC) remain one point behind Ashland for first place in the GLIAC. ODU continues its homestand, hosting Tiffin University (6-5-0) this Friday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. as part of a Panther men's and women's soccer doubleheader.
