OWENSBORO, Ky. - Leaving the state of Ohio for the first time in 26 days, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (13-8, 7-6) men's basketball team headed to Kentucky for a rematch against the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers (14-8, 8-6) on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon.
Despite a frantic comeback in regulation to force an extra period, Ohio Dominican was unable to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan as ODU fell 73-71 in the Owensboro Sportscenter.
BOX SCORE NOTES
- Derek Goodman was the leading scorer for the Black and Gold with 20 points tallied. He had seven field goals made, including a team-high three triples along with three free throws. Goodman added five rebounds and four assists.
- Elijah Hinton was seven-of-12 shooting for 17 points and a team-best eight rebounds (four offensive boards).
- Caleb Conard scored eight points with two rebounds and one block.
- Carson Seemann gave ODU three points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
- Terrance Broughton neared a triple-double with eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.
- Kyler Krull knocked down two threes off the bench, setting a career-high for scoring at six points.
- Ohio Dominican shot 41.5% (27-65) from the field, 34.6% (9-26) from three and 66.7% (8-12) from the free throw line in the game.
- Kentucky Wesleyan held the edge in field goal and free throw shooting. The Panthers were a 44.3% (27-61) field goal percentage, 31.0% (9-29) from three and 71.4% (10-14) at the stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- KWC started the game on a 7-2 run in the first two and a half minutes. Ohio Dominican followed with the next seven points, taking a 9-7 lead with just over 16 minutes left in the first half.
- Kentucky Wesleyan scored nine straight points in three plus minutes, part of a larger 23-10 run that spanned nine minutes as KWC led 30-19 after the under-eight media timeout.
- Krull nailed two three pointers combined with a Broughton three as ODU went on a 9-0 run to trim the lead to 30-28 with 4:20 before halftime.
- KWC kept the lead and took a 36-30 lead into the break.
- ODU got as close as 38-33 on a Broughton three before KWC added more to their lead - leading by as many as 12 (51-39) with 10:30 remaining.
- Goodman scored six of the next eight points for Ohio Dominican as an 8-0 run got the Black and Gold within 51-47 at the under-eight timeout.
- Kentucky Wesleyan elevated the lead to 65-55 with 3:16 left.
- ODU ended the game on a 12-2 run with Hinton and Goodman scoring six points each. The Panthers forced overtime at 67-67 as Goodman made three free throws with just seven seconds left.
- The low-scoring overtime period saw ODU lead twice at 69-67 and 71-69. The 71-69 lead came with 1:29 left on a Hinton layup.
- KWC tied the game at 71 with 1:01 to go on a layup and scored the go-ahead free throws with under four seconds on the clock.
