ASHLAND, Ohio - Facing the Ashland Eagles (9-4, 3-2) for the second time in 16 days, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (9-4, 3-2) men's basketball team rode the ups and downs of a roller coaster matchup on Saturday (Jan. 3) afternoon.
Ashland stunned Ohio Dominican with a late 11-0 run, stealing a 70-69 win in Kates Gymnasium to split the season series.
BOX SCORE NOTES
- Elijah Hinton notched his third consecutive double-double on a 21-point, 16-rebound contest. He shot eight-of-16 on the floor with a trio of three pointers and two free throws. His 16 boards was a career-high. Hinton had half of the blocks on the day with two rejections.
- Terrance Broughton added 13 points on five field goals and three triples with seven assists and three steals.
- Caleb Conard finished with seven points and six rebounds, adding a block. Three of his points came at the free throw line.
- Logan Ryan and Derek Goodman each scored 12 points as four Panthers were in double figures.
- Goodman had two threes as a part of five field goals with three rebounds and two assists.
- Ryan had his fifth double-digit effort off the bench, going four-of-ten overall and three-of-four at the free throw line.
- Ohio Dominican shot 41.9% (26-62) overall, 29.0% (9-31) from three point range and 53.3% (8-15) at the free throw line.
- Ashland was at 47.4% (27-57) from the field, 9.1% (1-11) from deep and 68.2% (15-22) at the stripe.
- Ashland had the edge in rebounding 38-37 but ODU won the offensive board battle 12-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ashland led 3-0 early on with three free throws but the game was tied 3-3, 5-5 and 7-7 before the Panthers opened a 12-7 lead with 15:13 left in the half.
- Over the next five plus minutes, Ashland answered with a 15-0 run to take a 22-12 lead - tied for the Eagles' largest lead of the day ten minutes before halftime.
- The Eagles kept the lead as many as ten twice more in the final ten minutes with the Panthers cutting it to six once.
- Ashland led 34-27 at the break.
- Broughton scored the first five points of the second half, trimming the lead to 34-32 in the first minute.
- The lead was pushed to 40-34. Broughton was the spark of an ODU 7-0 run as he scored five in a row allowing ODU to regain a 41-40 lead with 14:09 left. Ryan later gave the Panthers a 44-43 lead with a three pointer but Ashland had an answer, an 8-1 push over three minutes to take back the lead and lead 51-45 with 11 to go on the clock.
- Goodman and Hinton pulled together for a 10-2 spurt that got the Panthers back in front 55-53 at the eight minute media timeout.
- Ashland tied the game at 55 right before a major ODU run of 14-4 that gave the visitors a 69-59 lead with 3:34 left.
- The comeback effort for Ashland picked up as they rattled off 11 straight points in the last 3:34 as Destin Logan gave Ashland the 70-69 lead on two free throws in the final ten seconds and then blocked the potential game-winner for ODU at the buzzer.
