COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (18-28, 12-16 G-MAC) baseball team hosted the Malone Pioneers (16-29, 7-21 G-MAC) in an effort to keep the playoff hopes alive on Thursday (April 24) and Saturday (April 26) in Panther Valley.
Malone swept the Thursday doubleheader with wins of 15-8 and 6-2 while the Panthers salvaged a series split with a Saturday sweep. Ohio Dominican won 8-5 and 12-5 in the Alumni Day contests.
Game 1 (L, 15-8)
- Malone started from in front with a run in the second and a pair of runs in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
- The Panthers started the rally in the fourth inning as they chipped away with two runs across the plate. Gianni Passarelli doubled and came home on a RBI single by CJ Dean. Two batters later, Noah Schacht singled home Dean as the Panthers trailed 3-2.
- One swing of the bat gave Malone three runs back in the fifth inning as the lead was moved back to 6-2. In the bottom half of the frame, ODU got some base runners with a walk and single. Passarelli cleared the bases with a two-run triple for a 6-4 deficit.
- From the sixth through the ninth innings, Malone added nine runs with three in the seventh and four in the ninth for a 15-4 lead.
- One final rally got the final score closer in the bottom of the ninth for the Panthers. Drew Emerson walked and Jacob Adams singled with one out in the inning. Dean doubled home Emerson before Mason Kurtz singled home both runners. Schacht capped the scoring with a RBI double and it made the final score 15-8.
- With 14 hits in the game, six different players accounted for the hits with multi-hit games. Schacht and Scherette each had three hits with Adams, Passarelli, Dean and Kurtz all earning two knocks.
- Landon Ringhiser allowed five runs (three earned) in four innings as the game one starter, taking the loss (2-6). Chase Hunt pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowing eight runs (five earned).
Game 2 (L, 6-2)
- The team traded runs in the first and second innings to keep the game knotted up. After Malone started the scoring in the first, Passarelli got the tying run home on a sacrifice fly double play. One inning later, Jake Scherette answered with a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
- Malone took the lead in the fifth inning with a wild pitch. They later added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh for a 6-2 lead.
- ODU had the tying run on deck in the seventh but Malone completed the Thursday sweep 6-2.
- Adams had the lone two-hit game in the nightcap, reaching base three times on a hit by pitch as well. Emerson had a hit and was hit twice to get aboard three times.
- Steven Chapman gave up five runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings, falling to 4-3 on the year. Andrew Mouch followed with one run allowed in 1.1 innings.
Game 3 (W, 8-5)
- For the first time in the series, Ohio Dominican started with a lead as they scored twice in the first inning. Starting with an infield single from Adams and a walk by Peter Jelenic, Passarelli singled home Adams after a sacrifice bunt. A fielder's choice by Dean got the second run home for a 2-0 lead.
- Three runs for Malone took the lead back briefly because a six-run third inning got the Panthers back on top. Four walks and four hits were the damage by the Panthers. Jordan Daniels tripled home three runs with Schacht and Emerson notching RBI singles in the inning that sent 11 men to the plate.
- Malone got runs in the fifth and sixth inning, closing the gap to 8-5 but they could not get any closer leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.
- Schacht had his second three-hit game of the series, leading the Panthers. Daniels had two hits as both Schacht and Daniels had triples in the game. Seven of the nine starters had hits.
- Jaxson Stried started and took the ball into the sixth inning despite early trouble. He allowed five runs total on eight hits and four walks to improve to 2-3 this season. Jeremy Ramirez got his second save with a 1.2 inning appearance with no runs allowed, striking out three.
Game 4 (W, 12-5)
- Malone led 1-0 after two innings but another six-run frame for ODU blew things open in the third. Scherette opened the inning with a solo home run to right field before Emerson blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence three batters later. Dean singled home a run before back-to-back Malone errors allowed two runs to score as ODU led 6-1 after three innings.
- With the bases loaded, ODU tagged on two extra runs in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly for Passarelli and a RBI single for Kurtz.
- The teams exchanged runs in each of the next four innings as one run was scored in every half inning. Jelenic and Daniels had RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings before Passarelli capped his series with a solo shot to right center in the seventh. Sam Battles ended the scoring in the eighth inning with a RBI single as the score was 12-5.
- They tied the first game with 14 hits and six players had two hits. Jelenic, Emerson, Passarelli, Dean, Battles and Daniels all reached that category as eight of the nine starters had hits and drove in at least one run.
- Jared Hoersten tossed five innings of two-run ball on seven hits and three walks. He fanned four batters as the starter and got the win. Chris Bartholomew pitched three innings with three runs allowed. Mouch pitched for the second time in the series and this time got a scoreless inning.
ODU will close the regular season at home next week, hosting Kentucky Wesleyan with a chance to qualify for the Great Midwest Tournament. The series will begin Thursday with Senior Day coming on Friday.
