Cardinals Rally Past Panthers in Toledo, 14-8

TOLEDO, Ohio - Before a crucial three week stretch to end the regular season, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (15-23) baseball team finished off the non-conference slate with a neutral site contest against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (23-12) on Tuesday (April 15) afternoon.

Despite a seven-run second inning for the Panthers, Saginaw Valley rallied for a 14-8 win in Toledo at Mercy Field on a windy afternoon.

The Cardinals opened the game with two runs and had an opportunity for more against starter Jeremy Ramirez. With the bases loaded, Ramirez got a key 5-2-3 double play to end the threat at only a 2-0 deficit.

In the bottom of the second inning, ODU erupted for seven runs - all with two outs. CJ Dean opened the inning with a walk before two strikeouts. Dean later scored on a RBI double by Gianni Passarelli. After a single by Noah Schacht, Peter Jelenic doubled home both Passarelli and Schacht for a 3-2 lead. A walk along with a hit by pitch and the bases were loaded. Mason Kurtz and Jacob Adams both had two-run singles in the frame as the game ballooned to 7-2 after two innings.

Saginaw Valley tied the game with three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth inning.

ODU used a bases loaded walk from Adams to regain the 8-7 lead in the fourth.

Four runs in the SVSU fifth and three more in the seventh inning pushed the Cardinals ahead 14-8 as they took the midweek contest.

Dean had a three-hit game (including two doubles) for ODU, part of a ten-hit attack for the Panthers. Jelenic was the other Panther in multi hits with two. Adams plated three runs with Jelenic and Kurtz driving in two runs each. Jordan Daniels walked three times and scored twice.

Ramirez allowed five runs in two plus innings as the starter. Chase Hunt replaced Ramirez and was responsible for six runs allowed in 2.1 innings, taking the loss. Chris Bartholomew followed with three runs allowed in 2.2 innings. Andrew Mouch and Will Marrero each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

The Panthers will travel to Thomas More for a four-game series, starting on Thursday (April 17) instead of Friday (April 18).
