Baseball Takes Three of Four From Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - After a series win against Cedarville last week, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (15-22, 9-11 G-MAC) baseball team looked to gain another series win on the road against the Walsh Cavaliers (10-22, 8-11 G-MAC).

Ohio Dominican did that with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday (April 12) with wins of 13-0 and 2-0. Walsh got one game on Sunday (April 13) with an 11-1 win in game three before ODU took the series with a 6-4 win in the final game.

Game 1 (W, 13-0 in 7 innings)
  • Ohio Dominican broke the scoreless tie in the third inning off of a RBI single by Drew Emerson
  • Five runs in the next inning pushed the Panthers lead to 6-0. Three singles loaded the bases with one out. Jake Scherette walked in a run with a bases loaded walk. Jordan Daniels doubled in a pair of runs before Peter Jelenic had a sacrifice fly. Emerson capped the inning with an RBI triple to right field.
  • The fifth inning added four more runs for the Panthers on two hits. Jacob Adams blasted a solo home run to center field before a pitching change occurred for Walsh. Two hit batters and a single put ODU in key position with no outs. Scherette and Daniels both walked in runs forcing a second pitching change. Jelenic made it 10-0 with a second sacrifice fly of the day.
  • CJ Dean went deep in consecutive innings to end the scoring at 13-0. After a solo shot in the sixth inning, Dean drilled a two-run shot in the seventh inning for his third multi-homer game of the season.
  • The Panthers tallied 14 hits as five different players had at least two hits. Jelenic and Dean each had three hits with Adams, Noah Schacht and Scherette having two hits. Dean scored four times for the second time this season.
  • Jaxson Stried tossed six shutout innings with three hits and three walks allowed. Eric Geddes finished the game with a scoreless seventh inning.
Game 2 (W, 2-0)
  • Ohio Dominican picked up where they left off in game one with a run in the first inning, making it six straight innings scored. After a leadoff walk by Daniels and a single by Jelenic, two ground outs brought Daniels home. Gianni Passarelli plated Daniels with a ground out and a 1-0 lead.
  • A single run in the 5th inning added some insurance for the Panthers. Mason Kurtz walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two straight singles from Scherette and Daniels got Kurtz in for a 2-0 lead.
  • Daniels had two of the six hits for the Panthers in the leadoff spot.
  • Steven Chapman went the distance with a seven-inning complete game shutout. He scattered seven hits and one walk to keep Walsh scoreless with three strikeouts.
Game 3 (L, 11-1)
  • Between two runs in the first and six runs in the second inning, Walsh led 8-0 over the Panthers.
  • Three straight singles in the fifth inning got the Panthers on the board. Adams, Dean and Kurtz started the frame with base hits as Kurtz scored Adams for an 8-1 deficit.
  • Walsh closed the game with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning, leading 11-1.
  • ODU was limited to five hits with Kurtz notching a pair of singles.
  • Jared Hoersten started and took the loss with seven runs allowed (six earned) in 1.1 innings.
Game 4 (W, 6-4)
  • For the third time in the series, ODU scored first - this time in the second inning. Scherette lined an one-out triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by Sam Battles
  • Three more runs pushed the ODU advantage to 4-0 in the fifth inning. Battles led off with a double with a walk from Jelenic to follow. After a sacrifice bunt, Emerson plated both Battles and Jelenic. Two more singles from Kurtz and Adams put Panthers at every base with one out. Dean got one run home on a sacrifice fly.
  • Walsh made it a game with a three spot in the fifth inning as they closed the gap to 4-3.
  • In the sixth inning, Jelenic scored Scherette with a sacrifice fly after he led off with a double. ODU got a run back for a 5-4 lead before the Cavaliers answered in the bottom half with a run.
  • Clinging to a 5-4 lead, ODU created some distance in the eighth inning. Battles and Jelenic singled with a walk from Daniels. Kurtz walked in a run with the bases loaded for a 6-4 lead.
  • Walsh got the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings but ODU got the series win 6-4.
  • Kurtz had three hits as Adams, Scherette and Battles tallied a pair of hits each.
  • Gavin Mangus got the win in relief with one run allowed in 4.2 innings after Landon Ringhiser started and gave up three runs in 4.1 innings.
ODU heads to Toledo, Ohio on Tuesday (April 15) for a neutral site contest against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals at Mercy Field. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM in the midweek contest.
