DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (3-7) baseball team began a six-day span in the Sunshine State with a doubleheader against the California (Pa.) Vulcans (6-2) on Thursday (March 6).
Ohio Dominican started the day with a 4-1 win in the opener before the Vulcans earned a 5-0 win in the nightcap at NorthEast Regional Park.
Game 1 (W, 4-1)
- Cal (Pa.) started the scoring in the second inning with a RBI single, bringing in the first run.
- A three-run third inning allowed the Panthers to take a 3-1 lead. Drew Emerson reached on an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Peter Jelenic singled home Emerson to tie the game at one. Jelenic got to third base on a throwing error during a fielder's choice from CJ Dean. Dean stole second as both runners scored on a two-run double by Jacob Adams.
- The Panthers tacked on a run in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 4-1. Steven Chapman got to first base on a fielding error by the shortstop. After a flyout and a groundout, Chapman scored on a RBI single by Jordan Daniels.
- California (Pa.) got the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but the Panthers closed the game out 4-1.
- ODU got five hits in the game while taking advantage of four Vulcan errors.
- Trayce Mercer went the distance in game one, throwing seven innings of one-run ball. He scattered six singles with four strikeouts.
Game 2 (L, 5-0)
- The Vulcans had the first run of the game in the first inning as a runner came home on a delayed double steal rundown.
- As the home team, Cal (Pa.) added one run in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
- Ohio Dominican loaded the bases in the sixth inning with three walks but could not break into the Vulcans lead of 4-0.
- The final run scored in the sixth inning after a failed pickoff attempt led to a RBI single.
- ODU could not break into the hit column as they were no-hit for the first time since February 25, 2018 against Mercyhurst.
- The Panthers managed six walks in the game as Dean walked twice.
- Landon Ringhiser allowed four runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings as the starter. He dropped to 1-2 this season with six hits and three walks given up. Jaxson Stried gave up one unearned run in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Panthers will travel to Embry-Riddle on Friday (March 7) for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM in Daytona Beach.
