DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - On day two of the Florida trip for the Ohio Dominican Panthers (4-8) baseball team, they traveled to Daytona Beach for a doubleheader against the Embry-Riddle Eagles (10-6).
The teams split Friday's (March 7) doubleheader behind big offensive performances. Ohio Dominican won 15-7 in the opener before the Eagles returned the favor 14-5 at Sliwa Stadium.
Game 1 (W, 15-7)
- Embry-Riddle took advantage of three walks in the first inning, leading to two runs crossing the plate.
- In the second inning, Ohio Dominican tallied four runs on four hits to put the lead in ODU's column 4-2. Noah Schacht singled and got to second when Jake Scherette walked. Mason Kurtz started his hot day at the plate with an RBI single, scoring Schacht. Jordan Daniels plated Scherette with a safety squeeze to tie the game. After a Daniels stolen base, Peter Jelenic drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
- The Eagles tied the game at four with single runs in the second and third innings.
- Kurtz drilled a solo home run to left center field in the fourth inning, retaking the Panthers lead 5-4.
- A big six-run sixth inning blew the game open for the Panthers as the lead grew to 11-4 after seven hits and two errors occurred with 11 men at the plate. Jelenic, Jacob Adams, Gianni Passarelli and Drew Emerson each had RBI singles while Schacht added a sacrifice fly.
- In the eighth inning, Kurtz tallied his fourth hit of the game as him and Daniels had RBI singles as the lead expanded to 13-4.
- Three runs in the Embry-Riddle eighth closed the lead to 13-7 but ODU answered with two more ninth inning runs. After three straight walks, Emerson grounded out and Schacht ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
- ODU tallied 18 hits in the game with all starters entering the hit column. Five players had multi-hit games as Kurtz led with four hits. Daniels and Jelenic had three hits with Passarelli and Scherette having two hits.
- Two players scored three times - Kurtz and Scherette while four other players crossed home plate twice: Daniels, Adams, Passarelli and Schacht.
- Kurtz and Jelenic plated three runs in the game as Daniels, Emerson and Schacht drove in a pair each.
- Chase Hunt started the game and got into the third inning. Hunt allowed four runs on three hits and seven walks. Gavin Mangus earned his second win of the season, throwing five innings with three runs surrendered on four hits and three walks. Jared Hoersten closed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings.
Game 2 (L, 14-5)
- After Daniels doubled to open the game, Adams plated him with a RBI single as ODU started the game with a 1-0 lead.
- Five runs scored for the Eagles in the bottom of the first as Embry-Riddle led 5-1 after the opening frame.
- Four hits for the Panthers in the second inning led to three runs as the lead shrunk to 5-4. Emerson walked and swiped second base before a Scherette RBI double. Kurtz followed with a RBI single as back-to-back doubles by Daniels and Jelenic brought in the final run.
- Embry-Riddle combined for five runs in the second and third innings as a four-run third opened a 10-4 lead.
- The Eagles later scored one run in the sixth and three runs in the eighth as E-R led 14-4.
- Two singles and an error got the Panthers on the board for the final time. Mitch Santino singled before Jaxson Stried reached on an error. Scherette singled home Santino for the final tally of a 14-5 defeat.
- Daniels, Scherette and Kurtz all had two hits - counting for six of the nine hits. The trio had four doubles on the day.
- Chris Bartholomew got the game two start with seven runs (five earned) allowed in two innings. Jeremy Ramirez pitched two innings with three runs given up while Eric Geddes surrendered one run in two frames. Andrew Mouch was hit for three runs in his inning as Steven Chapman tossed a scoreless inning.
The Florida trip continues on Sunday (March 9) with a matchup against #23 Minnesota State Mankato in Davenport.
