Panthers and Warriors Split Four Game Neutral Site Series

DAYTON, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (2-6) baseball team returned to the diamond for a four-game neutral site series against the Wayne State Warriors (4-4) on Monday (Feb. 24) and Tuesday (Feb. 25).

Weather shifted the series to the campus of Wright State University as each teams got splits at Nischwitz Stadium as all games were seven innings in length.

Game 1 (L, 5-3)
  • Wayne State scored two runs in the top of the first inning before the Panthers stepped to the plate. In the bottom of the first, Jacob Adams tied the game with a two-run single to score Peter Jelenic and Gianni Passarelli, who both singled.
  • The game remained tied until the top of the sixth inning when the Warriors regained the 5-2 lead with three runs on three hits.
  • Ohio Dominican tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs on a single, hit by pitch and walk. Jelenic walked with the bases loaded but ODU could not get any closer, falling 5-3.
  • Five different Panthers tallied a single with Adams driving in two runs. CJ Dean walked twice in the game with a stolen base.
  • Trayce Mercer tossed 5.2 innings as the starter, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. Mercer struck out two in his outing as he fell to 0-1. Jared Hoersten gave up one run in his 1.1 innings of relief.
Game 2 (W, 13-8)
  • Ohio Dominican scored five runs in the first inning without a hit, taking advantage of five walks and two hit by pitches. Dean was hit by a pitch before Noah Schacht, Mitch Santino and Jelenic coaxed walks with the bases loaded. A wild pitch led to the fifth run that Dean crossed the plate.
  • Four Warriors runs in the second inning closed the gap to 5-4 before Dean blasted a solo home run to left center field in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-4 Panther lead.
  • The fourth inning featured a pair of runs for both teams. Two sacrifice flies for Wayne State tied the game but the lead was short-lived. Dean broke the 6-6 tie with a two-run double to left field.
  • In the fifth inning, the Panthers blew the game wide open with a five-run fifth inning. Four walks loaded the bases with Adams bringing home a run. After a pitching change, Dean sent a grand slam over the left field fence as the lead grew to 13-6.
  • Two final runs for the Warriors came home in the seventh but the Panthers got their first win of the season, a 13-8 victory.
  • ODU tallied 13 runs on five hits with the help of 12 walks and two hit batters. Dean had three hits, including two home runs leading to eight RBI while scoring three runs. Dean's eight RBI set a single game record for the Panthers in the Division II era. Passarelli also scored three times and was one of five Panthers with two walks in the game.
  • Steven Chapman started the game with six runs allowed in 3.1 innings. Gavin Mangus made his Panthers debut with two runs surrendered in 3.1 innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win. Garrett Roach got the final out on one pitch in his collegiate debut.

  • Jelenic doubled home a run in the fourth inning and Jake Scherette brought home a run on a double play in the fifth inning, trimming the lead to 5-2.
  • The Warriors got a run back in the fifth inning before a RBI groundout by Passarelli pulled the Panthers to 6-3.
  • A solo home run in the sixth inning closed the scoring at 7-3 as the Panthers opened the Tuesday opener.
  • ODU had four hits, with doubles by Passarelli and Jelenic. Jordan Daniels swiped two bases in the game.
  • Chase Hunt fell to 0-2 after allowing five runs in two hitless innings as the starter. Chris Bartholomew scattered one run on three hits in three innings of relief. Jaxson Stried gave up a run in his lone inning of relief.
Game 4 (W, 3-2)
  • Some small ball led to the first run of the game in the third inning for the Panthers. Daniels walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and got to third on a wild pitch. Dean blooped a RBI single between the second baseman and right fielder, scoring Daniels.
  • Passarelli drilled a solo home run to the right center field gap, adding to the ODU lead of 2-0 in the fifth inning.
