Baseball Swept by Coker in Opening Weekend Series

HARTVILLE, S.C. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (0-4) baseball team traveled south to kick off the 2025 season with four games against the Coker Cobras (9-4) this weekend.

Coker took both ends of the doubleheaders on Friday (Feb. 14) and Saturday (Feb. 15) at Tom J. New Field at Dave Schmotzer Stadium.

Game 1 (L, 6-4)
  • ODU took the 2-0 lead in the third inning, scoring the first runs of the campaign. Jordan Daniels led off with a single and moved to third on an error and steal, respectively. After Drew Emerson was hit by a pitch, Gianni Passarelli plated Daniels with a sacrifice fly. Jake Scherette singled home Emerson two batters later.
  • Coker got a run across in the fifth inning on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, cutting the lead in half at 2-1.
  • One inning later, another sacrifice fly regained the two-run advantage for the Panthers. ODU loaded the bases with two singles and an error before Mitch Santino pushed the lead to 3-1.
  • A five-run seventh inning gave the Cobras a 6-3 lead.
  • In the eighth inning, ODU made one more attempt at a comeback with one out. Santino singled and Daniels doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. CJ Dean grounded out for a 6-4 score. The Panthers got the go-ahead run at the plate but could not get closer.
  • Passarelli, Scherette and Sam Battles each had two hits as the Panthers outhit the Cobras 10-8.
  • Trayce Mercer threw a quality start in the opener, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over six innings. He fanned three before turning the ball over to Jeremy Ramirez in the seventh. Ramirez took the loss (0-1) with five runs allowed in an inning. Jaxson Stried tossed a scoreless eighth inning in his collegiate debut.
Game 2 (L, 18-1 in 7 innings)
  • Coker started off with five runs in the first inning and six in the second inning. A seven-run fourth inning added on for the Cobras.
  • The Panthers scratched one run across in the seventh inning. Passarelli walked and got to second on a passed ball. Scherette notched his second RBI knock of the day, scoring Passarelli with a single.
  • Peter Jelenic, Braden Reed and Scherette each had a hit for the Panthers.
  • Steven Chapman started the second game, giving up ten runs in 1.2 innings and getting the loss (0-1). Andrew Mouch allowed five runs in 1.1 innings while Eric Geddes surrendered three runs in his first inning of work. Sammy Miller scattered three hits and two hit batters in two scoreless innings of work.
Game 3 (L, 15-8)
  • Coker jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning while ODU scored their first run in the second inning. Jacob Adams reached on an one-out error before Chapman walked. Scherette tallied his third RBI single of the series, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
  • The Cobras answered back in the bottom of the second with the Panthers following in the third. After Emerson singled and Jelenic walked, Adams doubled home both runners as ODU clawed their way to 4-3.
  • Just as the Panthers closed the gap, Coker tallied four runs in the third and five runs in the fourth inning. A solo fourth inning blast by Dean kept the Cobras from scoring nine straight runs. Coker led 13-4 after four innings.
  • Two runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning for Ohio Dominican. With runners on first and second, Battles singled home a run before stealing second. Scherette did his normal spot for the weekend - driving home a run with a RBI single. A hit batter loaded the bases with two outs but no further runs scored. The score was 13-6 at the halfway point of the game.
  • A pair of Coker runs created a nine-run lead entering the seventh inning.
  • ODU closed the scoring in the seventh inning, plating two runs. Chapman led off with a double to left field. Scherette doubled him home, leading to Scherette coming home on a pick-off at first base.
  • Both teams notched 12 hits in the game as Scherette and Emerson had three-hit games. Scherette drove in three runs as Adams and Chapman scored two runs each.
  • Chase Hunt started and threw three innings. Hunt gave up eight runs on six hits with five walks, dropping to 0-1 on the season.
  • Chris Bartholomew went five innings in relief with seven runs allowed.
Game 4 (L, 4-3 in 7 innings)
  • The Cobras got on the board with two runs in the first two frames.
  • In the third inning, an error fueled the Panthers to get closer. Daniels reached on an error by the shortstop, getting him to second base. A groundout moved Daniels one base closer into scoring position. Emerson lined a single to center field, cutting the lead to 2-1. A walk and a single loaded the bases but a double play kept the game at 2-1.
  • A two-run home run by Coker in the bottom half of the third got the lead up to 4-1.
  • During the sixth inning, two walks and a hit by pitch got some runners on the bases. With two on, Emerson singled home the first run for a 4-2 deficit.
  • One inning later, the Panthers made one last ditch effort at avoiding the sweep. A single and an error got the tying runs on base. Passarelli doubled down the left field line, scoring a two-out run. With the tying run at third, the Panthers could not tie the game, falling 4-3.
  • Emerson and Adams notched two hits each of the seven hits for the Panthers.
  • Landon Ringhiser opened his collegiate career with a solid first start. Ringhiser (0-1) surrendered four runs (three earned) on three hits over four and a third innings. Jared Hoersten threw 1.2 scoreless frames of relief.
Ohio Dominican will take on the Wayne State (Mich.) Warriors at Prasco Park next weekend. The four-game series opens on Saturday (Feb. 22) on Legacy Field.
