Women's Basketball Welcomes KWC for Conference Opener, Falling 66-60

COLUMBUS, OHReturning to campus after Thanksgiving break and an eight-day layoff, the Ohio Dominican women's basketball team opened Great Midwest Conference (G-MAC) play by welcoming the Kentucky Wesleyan Purple Panthers to Columbus. After a hard-fought contest, the Panthers fell to KWC, 66-60. 

Individual Performances 

Two Panthers scored in double digits: 

  • Macy Chapman led the team with 16 points, adding six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block across 33 minutes. Chapman was efficient from the floor and the line, shooting 5-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw stripe. 

  • Guard Sarah Ochs also contributed 16 points in 31 minutes, going 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line, along with collecting three rebounds. 

  • Forward Jenna Shackleford rounded out the top three scorers with 7 points. She was the team leader in rebounds (seven) and blocks (three). 

Game breakdown

The Black and Gold struggled to find their rhythm early, shooting just 30.77% in the first quarter. They did, however, show accuracy at the free-throw line (80%) compared to KWC's 66.67%. In the second quarter, ODU improved significantly, shooting 50% from the field to out-pace KWC (33.33%), cutting the halftime deficit to 26-22. 

The visiting Panthers widened their lead in the third quarter with 19 points to ODU's 13, taking a 45-35 lead into the final frame. ODU found their best three-point success this quarter, hitting 3-of-5 for 60%. 

The Black and Gold showed tremendous fight in the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points to KWC's 21, even after falling behind 50-35 early on. ODU clawed back to a four-point deficit (58-54) with 1:28 remaining and shot 53.85% for the quarter, but Kentucky Wesleyan was ultimately able to hold on for the 66-60 victory.
