CANTON, OH - With the postseason looming for the Ohio Dominican women's soccer team, the Panthers — sitting ninth in the G-MAC standings — traveled to Canton to face the seventh-place Malone Pioneers on King Field at Pioneer Park.
Led by goals from Ashley Yontz and Mallory Smucker, Ohio Dominican earned a 2–1 victory over Malone, with each goal coming in a different half.
Offensively, the Panthers outshot the Pioneers 10–8, putting six shots on target compared to Malone's five. ODU's attack picked up in the second half, tallying six shots after recording four in the first.
Goalkeepers were evenly matched, with Ella Schnitzer collecting two saves in each half. Corner kicks were also even, though the Panthers played a more physical game, committing 10 fouls to Malone's seven.
Ohio Dominican opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a composed play from the Black and Gold. After freshman Randi Morgan was tripped up in a slide tackle with a Malone defender, she recovered and found fellow freshman Ashley Yontz in space. Yontz unleashed a strike from nearly 25 yards out that sailed just past Malone goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan's outstretched arms into the upper center of the net, giving ODU a 1–0 lead.
In the second half, the Panthers struck again when junior Mallory Smucker battled a defender at the end line and finished for her second goal of the season. Eight minutes later, Malone's Gracie Ashton cut the deficit to 2–1 with help from a double assist, but the Pioneers couldn't find an equalizer. ODU held strong to secure the win, handing Malone its fifth conference loss of the year.
The Panthers now return to Columbus for a quick turnaround, hosting the Tiffin Dragons at 2:30 p.m., following the men's match.
