Panthers Battle With Timberwolves But Come Up Short in Final Quarter

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers women's basketball team hosted the Northwood Timberwolves in a critical G-MAC conference matchup this evening in Alumni Hall. Despite a strong first-half performance, the Panthers ultimately fell to the Timberwolves, 70-55. 

First Half 

The game started with Northwood taking a quick 9-2 lead, but Ohio Dominican settled into a rhythm. In the opening 10 minutes, the Timberwolves struggled with shooting, connecting on just 5 of 19 shots (26.3%) from the field and missing all seven of their three-point attempts.  

However, Northwood went a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line. On the other hand, Ohio Dominican shot 35.3% from the field (6-17) and 37.5% from beyond the arc (3-8). The Panthers outscored Northwood 16-14 in the first quarter. 

The second quarter saw a noticeable improvement for both teams, but Ohio Dominican continued to outplay Northwood. The Panthers shot 46.7% from the field and 50% from three-point range, adding a perfect 100% from the free-throw line. 

Northwood also improved its shooting in the second quarter, hitting 28.6% from the field but staying perfect from the free-throw line. Ohio Dominican outscored the Timberwolves 18-12 in the quarter, taking a 34-26 lead into halftime. Guard Brynn Mullet led the Panthers with 11 points, while Sarah Ochs added 9 points. 

Second Half 

Coming out of the break, Northwood turned up its offense, shooting 53.3% from the field and 40% from three-point range in the third quarter, while Ohio Dominican managed just 31.3% shooting and 33.3% from three. Northwood outscored Ohio Dominican 18-14 in the third, cutting the Panthers' lead to 48-44 heading into the final quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, Northwood surged ahead, outscoring Ohio Dominican 26-7. The Timberwolves shot 53.3% from the field and were strong from the free-throw line, hitting 8-11 attempts.  

Ohio Dominican, in contrast, went cold, hitting only 3 of 15 shots and missing all their three-point attempts. Despite staying perfect at the free-throw line, the Panthers couldn't overcome Northwood's hot streak.

Overall Takeaways

Northwood dominated in the paint, scoring 36 points to Ohio Dominican's 26. The Timberwolves also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 17 points off the Panthers' mistakes, and added 14 fast-break points. Ohio Dominican was limited to just 8 points off turnovers and 6 from the bench. 

Individually for the Panthers, Sarah Ochs finished as the leading scorer with 19 points, going 4-8 from three-point range. Brynn Mullet contributed 14 points, including 3-7 from beyond the arc. Forward Jenna Shackleford added 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
