Panthers Outlast Dragons in Overtime Battle

COLUMBUS, Ohio-  For the first game of 2025, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (5-8, 1-4 G-MAC) men's basketball team hosted the Tiffin Dragons (2-10, 0-4 G-MAC) in search of a second straight win and first in the G-MAC this season. 

It may have taken an extra overtime period but the Panthers held off the Dragons 87-82 on Saturday (Jan. 4) afternoon at Alumni Hall. 

BOX SCORE NOTES
  • Elijah Hinton led the team in scoring for the fifth time this season with a career-high 31 points. Hinton was 11-of-20 shooting from the floor with a trio of three pointers. He converted six-of-eight free throw attempts with five rebounds and three steals (tied with a career-best). 
  • Terrance Broughton facilitated on offense with six assists to go with his eight points and three rebounds. Broughton has five games of six or more assists this season. 
  • JeJuan Weatherspoon notched his fifth double-double of the campaign, tallying 13 points and ten rebounds. He was a part of three rejections, tying a career-best for the graduate student. 
  • Derek Goodman turned in his sixth double-figure scoring effort with 15 points. Goodman made three triples with three assists and two steals. 
  • Brady Moore added 12 points off the bench with four field goals and free throws, helping with four assists as well. 
  • Ohio Dominican was over the 50% field goal threshold for the fifth time this season as they made 50% of their shots. The Panthers hit 31-of-62 from the floor with 11 threes out of 31 attempts (35.5%). ODU was 14-of-18 at the free throw line.  
    • Tiffin ended the game with a 58.9% (33-of-56) field goal percentage. 
  • Ohio Dominican dished out 20 assists, the third game of the season above 20 assists. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tiffin scored the first four points of the game, taking a 4-0 lead in the opening minute. A pair of three pointers helped the Panthers scored eight straight points to lead 8-4 three minutes into the game. Two free throws for the Dragons got the lead down to 8-6 but then, Ohio Dominican erupted for a 17-5 run for a 25-11 lead at the under 12 media timeout. Hinton and Moore combined for 14 points on the run as the Panthers opened one of their largest leads of the day, 14 points. 
  • Tiffin got the lead down to seven points, 30-23 with a 12-5 run with six and a half minutes in the first half. 
  • The Panthers pushed the lead back to 44-30 in the final two minutes of the half and led 47-36 at halftime. 
  • ODU kept the lead above ten points for the first ten minutes of the second half, going into the under 12 media timeout at 65-54. 
  • Over the next eight minutes, Tiffin rallied to tie the game at 72 with an 18-7 rally. After the Dragons tied the game with 3:14 left, Hinton scored back-to-back baskets for a 76-72 advantage with ninety seconds left. Tiffin then scored the final four points as the game was tied with 13 seconds left, forcing overtime. 
  • Goodman hit the first shot of overtime, a three pointer as ODU took the lead that they would not relinquish. 
  • The Panthers made six free throws in the final minute to seal the 87-82 win.
